The talented editorial staff at The Fader was down in South Africa during the beginning of the World Cup, and they’ve been working on a terrific film series called Pitch Perfect. The 7th episode follows BLK JKS home to SA and includes footage of their EP release show at Bassline. Mpumi Mcata’s speech about “MZABALAZO” and their performance at the World Cup is incredibly inspiring.
“The country wrote a song; the people wrote a song.”
BLK JKS already wooed the whole world with their musical talent at the World Cup Opening Ceremony performance with Alica Keys last week, but they didn’t stop there. Over the weekend they got some field time of their own playing soccer with local teens at the first day of a week long soccer camp in Cape Town, SA. The band also performed an acoustic set during the camp’s pre-registration, along with their fellow South African artist HHP.
(RED) and Grassroot Soccer are hosting the soccer & education program for 100 local youth ages 12-16 in the Khayaletisa township in Cape Town this week. Both organizations work in the fight against AIDS— (RED) raises funds to buy medicine for those battling the disease, and Grassrot Soccer is an HIV/AIDS education program that uses soccer to fight HIV. The camp is hosted by Ethan Zohn, founder of Grassroot Soccer and former professional soccer player. This Skillz Holiday Program is one of more than 40 programs Grassroot Soccer has hosted throughout South Africa during the World Cup.
Behold! Streaming video of the BLK JKS collaboration with Alicia Keys now exists on the internet. The entire office was glued to my computer screen when this super surreal performance happened live last week at the World Cup Kickoff Celebration. They performed the famous South African song by the late pop diva Brenda Fassie – “Too Late For Mama.” When Alicia starts singing the first words of the song, you can hear the crowd in Orlando Stadium go absolutely nuts. We are so impressed with BLK JKS and Alicia Keys for making a really memorable performance that incorporates South African musical history both past and present during an incredible moment for Johannesburg.
Do you guys know how hard it was not to talk about this? HINT: REALLY HARD.
BLK JKS and Alicia Keys will be performing on stage at the FIFA World Cup Kick Off Celebration Concert. Together they will sing “Too Late For Mama” by South African legend, the late Brenda Fassie. Fassie was an unapologetic champion of life in the townships, and her controversial lifestyle made her a people’s champion as well. She was called “The Madonna of the Townships” by Time Magazine in 2001, 3 years before her untimely death in 2004.
There are a few different ways that U.S. fans can watch the concert:
-June 10th: Live on ESPN 2 at 2pm EST/8pm South Africa Standand Time
-June 10th: Online live streaming and exclusively on demand afterwards at Vevo
-June 11th: A specially produced highlight presentation of the concert 8pm EST on ABC
Or you can go to the record store and buy it because today is release day. Happy ZOL! day, everybody.
