The elastic pop songs of Here We Go Magic are like a musical approximate to the kinetic, carefully balanced mobiles of sculptor Alexander Calder. There is an immediate weightlessness and elegance to the movement of the pieces that belie the delicate, toiling construction at play, the everything in it's right place of the design, the undeniable dedication to craft, the elbow grease, just how fussed over these pieces most certainly are. And more simply, like Calder's mobiles, the songs seem to float just above us, in a space that feels just out of our terrestrial reach. And though HWGM's new album Be Small finds the band taking a, well, smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes -- from the live, expansive sound of 2012's A Different Ship, produced by Radiohead's 6th man Nigel Godrich, to Be Small's direct-to-board home-recorded album -- it hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and a singular sonic ambition.

WATCH: Here We Go Magic Perform for WNYE’s The Alternate Side, Plus Gorgeous Photos of the Band Live in Paris

Currently on a brief break from touring, Here We Go Magic made some time to stop in at WNYE for a live session on The Alternate Side. Luke, Michael and Pete are joined by new members of their touring band, Eliot Krimsky and Brian Bettancourt, for a four-song performance of tracks you’ll recognize from their latest release, A Different Ship. Watch “I Believe In Action” above and head to TAS for more videos and an interview with the band, which also airs this Friday, August 24 on 91.5 WNYE at 11 a.m. EDT.

It’s such a treat for a SC artist to play Paris, as we can always count on photographer Helene Peruzzaro to provide the best live photos. She caught Here We Go Magic at their Le Trabendo show earlier this year. You’ll find the gorgeous photos at Hartzine.

Here We Go Magic head back out on the road in September for US dates supporting Andrew Bird. They will then head back to Europe for shows throughout November. Dates and ticket links HERE.

Here We Go Magic Perform “Alone But Moving” at Resident Records

Bowlegs Music, who recently gave A Different Ship an 8.5, calling it“a superbly refreshing album – musically exciting and lyrically rich, it’s a brilliant exploration of self-perception and its occasional mismatch in time,” shares a wonderfully intimate video of Here We Go Magic at their Resident Records in-store. Perched on the checkout counter with guitars in hand, the gang perform “Alone But Moving,” off their newly released album, A Different Ship, which you can purchase HERE. It’s quite a special performance. Watch above.

Love for A Different Ship

“It’s really nice to hear an album that grows on you, and makes you want it to by the fact that you feel you haven’t got all it has to offer on your first go with it.” – Bark Music

“At times full of nervous vigour, at others letting itself fall blindly backwards into honeyed daydream, A Different Ship has a life and character all of its own.” – Drowned In Sound

“The track’s limitless replay value is indicative of the album as a whole, and with new details revealed with each subsequent listen A Different Ship is another exciting chapter in the story of a band who continue to improve with every release.” – The Quietus

Here We Go Magic Pick Up a Hitchhiking John Waters? Yes.

While driving along Route 70 in Ohio today, Here We Go Magic passed a hitchhiker who just happened to be THE John Waters. Hitchhiking is not a rare event for Waters, who in a recent interview said, “I do still hitchhike – it’s a great way to meet people, and to have sex. I’ve hitchhiked in Baltimore, Provincetown, San Francisco – what, people don’t hitchhike in Australia?” The band is currently making their way towards Bloomington, Indiana for a show at The Bishop tonight. Perhaps Waters will join? Guess you’ll have to be there to find out!
