The last video you’ll ever watch? Suuns makes you wonder with their new Ringu-reminiscent take on “Red Song,” an eerie track off of their latest 12″ (out now on SC). Culled from old found tapes and edited together on an old VHS recorder the band bought for $4, the video features lead singer (and facial contortionist) Ben Shemie overlapped with distorted images. You can watch it now on Altered Zones. Or buy the 12″, which also features “Bambi,” right here.
Suuns are currently on tour in Europe through the beginning of December and will return to NYC to play a show with The Antlers at Webster Hall on December 10. You can see a full set of their dates here.
And if you see Ben, tell him if he keeps making that face it’ll get stuck that way.
The 12″ with two new songs from Suuns is out today on Secretly Canadian. “Bambi” is a creepy story of love lost and found, while “Red Song” is just that: a song about color. You can cop the vinyl from SC Distribution.
You can also check out the band’s remix of the Glasser song “Mirrorage” at FACT Magazine or download here. And don’t miss the band on their European tour that starts this week. They’ll play NYC with the Antlers on December 10th. All dates are listed here.
Suuns – Bambi b/w Red Song
Following last year’s release of their full length Zeroes QC and a successful round of touring, Suuns will put out a duo of new songs on 12″ this fall. The new tracks, “Bambi” and “Red Song” fit smoothly into the Montreal outfit’s oeuvre of dancefloor-friendly post-punk noir. yvynyl has premiered both tracks.
The band explains, “With a couple weeks off this summer in Montreal, we thought we’d take a crack at a few new songs. Stark and futuristic, these are extended jams that may or may not materialize as condensed versions of themselves on records to come. Open air textures, repetition and exploration were the name of the game for us on this one, and the finished product is a refined mining of the ideas that came out. “Bambi” is a creepy story of love lost and found, while “Red Song” is just that: a song about color.” The disc will be available on Secretly Canadian on November 15.
You can also watch video of the band performing “Red Song” live in Montreal this past weekend here.
Over the past year Suuns have built a reputation for supremely intense live shows “full of thrash, immediacy, and spastic explosiveness” (Brooklyn Vegan), “with an unhinged intensity uncharacteristic of any band in their genre” (Death + Taxes) or more simply and direct “Drone Scholars” (New York Times) and the “#1 Best New Band of 2011″ (NME). We have brought you videos for “Up Past The Nursery” and “Pie IX” (NSFW) both of which capture the dark and dangerous aesthetic, but neither has properly captured the sheer force of Suuns live show. Now thanks to director Daniel Ryan of FOR NO ONE.tv, we have a new video that puts you onstage with the band as they cast their “Gaze” right into your eye sockets.
Suuns are currently tearing up the Summer Festival Scene in Europe and Canada with recent performances at Primavera Sound, North by Northeast, and 13 more festivals peformances yet to come including appearances at Pukkelpop, Off Festival and Greenman. But never fear America, in September Suuns will be touring with Handsome Furs in the West and will be playing select dates in the rest of the country in this fall along a headlining Canadaian tour and a co-headlining North American tour with PS I Love You.
