MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO. Rule First-Ever Daytrotter Session, Offer Up A Wicked Warren Zevon Cover

It’s sort of unbelievable, but after all Magnolia Electric Co.’s time spent crisscrossing the country, the stars (and moons?) were never quite aligned right to get them into Daytrotter’s Rock Island, Il. studio. Until now.

The band’s first-ever Daytrotter session, recorded during the MECo.’s summer tour, was posted to the Daytrotter site earlier this week and features tunes from their most recent release, Josephine, as well a blazing cover of the Warren Zevon classic “Lawyers, Guns and Money” and a lovely, as-yet-unreleased tune called “Devil Wings.”

Daytrotter’s Sean Moeller had these lovely words to say about Jason Molina and company: “It’s as if we’re hearing songs that were written in Nashville in the 50s and 60s, digging into the saddest aspects of love and life that any man would ever have the privilege of dealing with, though he smothers them not with aw shucks humor or faux defiance – as if some effort was being made to defray the pain and sorrow by spinning the story to seem more like a blessing or a valuable lesson learned by a young, foolish hayseed – but with real, salt in the wounds, dirt in the eye rub.”

Listen to, and download, tracks from the session HERE.

Also, below is a wonderful MECo. interview and performance clip from their recent show in Rome, from our friends at Sound36 magazine.
