Antony Hegarty and Daniel Lopatin rework Oneohtrix Point Never’s “Returnal”

Antony Hegarty can rework a song like no other. If you’ve heard his rendition of “Crazy in Love,” you know he has the power to completely re-appropriate a feel-good, carefree pop duet into a stark, haunting solo that embodies abandonment and addiction. It should come as no surprise, then, that his take on Oneohtrix Point Never’s “Returnal” is quite the transformation.

The dominant synths are replaced by OPN’s Daniel Lopatin beautiful and simple piano work. Antony lives and breathes every word in “Returnal,” while the lyrics in the original are hardly recognizable in a myriad of electronica.

You can listen to both tracks over at Pitchfork.

This collaboration is part of an OPN 7″ out August 31 on Editions Mego. It will also include a remix of “Returnal” by Fennesz.
