DVD + DOCUMENTARY ANNOUNCE // Antony and the Johnsons And Charles Atlas Announce ‘TURNING’ Documentary And Concert, Out Nov. 10/11 Via Secretly Canadian/Rough Trade

Today, we are proud to announce the release of TURNING, a concert film documentary captured during the critically acclaimed tour of Europe by Antony and the Johnsons and Charles Atlas during the fall of 2006. TURNING is a synthesis of Antony’s songs and Atlas’s video portraiture of the 13 woman who performed on stage in a series of performances. Watch the trailer and listen to track ‘Daylight And The Sun‘ (Available as instant download with iTunes pre-orders) above.

From Antony-

“I would describe TURNING as some of the most significant work of my career. Charles Atlas and I spent seven years producing the film and another year and a half showing the film at select festivals. In the last three years especially, the recognition of transgendered people and the resurgence of feminist consciousness has exploded in popular culture around the world. We planted some seeds for this zeitgeist in 2006, when I travelled with thirteen courageous women across Europe and presented the concert TURNING, exploring the intersection between images of contemporary trans-femininity and visions of pioneering future feminist artists such as Kembra Pfahler and Johanna Constantine. We shared this circle of modern femininity with the world, bringing it from the late night stages of NYC to some of the most highly regarded theaters in Europe.”

TURNING saw its theatrical release from fall 2011 – summer 2012, premiering at festivals in London, Melbourne, New York City, and Copenhagen. The release of the deluxe edition of the TURNING DVD will coincide with select TV screenings around the world and will include a CD of the entire concert. The CD will contain live renditions of songs from the first three Antony and the Johnsons‘ full length albums – Antony and the Johnsons, I Am A Bird Now, and The Crying Light as performed by an ensemble of musicians including Maxim Moston, Rob Moose, Julia Kent, Parker Kindred, Jeff Langston and Thomas Bartlett. Additionally, it will also feature two rare Antony and the Johnsons studio recordings from that period.

TURNING will be available on DVD+CD and digitally on November 11 in North American via Secretly Canadian and November 10th in the UK and Europe via Rough Trade. Pre-order now via Secretly Canadian/Rough Trade, iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

G&V EP // Gardens & Villa Announce Free ‘Televisor’ EP, Listen To “Love Affair”, On Tour Now

Celebrating a successful string of summer shows and a new slew of fall tour dates starting tomorrow night, Gardens & Villa have released a new EP Televisor for free via their website www.gardensandvilla.com. Premiering via Stereogum this morning, preview the new EP with “Love Affair (Swift Demo)” above or on our Youtube / Soundcloud.

According to the band, Televisor is a collection of musical sketches, the majority of which were playfully brought into existence when they stopped by Richard Swift‘s National Freedom studio in February of 2012. During psychological experiments inspired by Carl Jung’s ‘Liber Novus’ they reflected on madness and greatness, searching for inspiration in redeeming symbols: smoke, mirrors and the late night hiss. Some danced in-between takes or barked like a train. The band later described their time with Swift as “a fun and frenzied recording, undertaken during professional hysterics.” The other pieces of Televisor were selected from the Dunes recordings with Tim Goldsworthy in 2013. Together these sessions represent some of the more hidden, shrouded sinews of a sonic structure, the unseen movements and psychedelic corridors of Gardens & Villa.

If you haven’t already, pick up their new album Dunes Dunes from iTunes, Amazon, SC Distribution, or your local record store.

LISTEN // Jens Lekman Shares ‘WWJD’ Mixtape Featuring Three Unreleased Songs

SC artist Jens Lekman is back with a special mixtape of his favorite tunes plus three never before heard tracks “WWJD”, “I Remember”, and “What’s That Perfume That You Wear?”. Jens offers the story behind the mix tape in his own words below.

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –

While travelling through midwest America some time ago I stopped at a gasstation and bought a WWJD bracelet for $1.99 and insisted that it stood for “What Would Jens Do?”. I would look at it when I felt indecisive, think about what Jens really would do and then do the opposite of that. I thought that would be a good way to find some new paths in life, and to get away from the paths I kept taking that didn’t lead me anywhere good.

“WWJD” is a song about regrets, learning from your mistakes, and bettering yourself. I wrote it last year, recorded it quickly and felt it didn’t fit in with most of the other songs I was writing. Together with “What’s That Perfume That You Wear?” and “I Remember” they weren’t adhering to the rules I had set up for my next album but they were also too good to forget. So I weaved them in exclusively on this mixtape where they are stations on a longer journey, where loops and smaller fragments, ideas for songs and favourite songs by others swoosh by outside the window. Feel free to open that window and feel the breeze in your hair.

Yours truly,
Jens Lekman

WATCH // Suuns Share ‘Sunspot’ Video Dir. By Ben Shemie, Tour UK And Europe In September + October

Celebrating newly announced UK + European tour dates this fall, SUUNS have shared a short film featuring ‘Sunspot’ from their 2013 release Images du Futur. Premiering via The Quietus and directed by band frontman Ben Shemie, the 30 minute music video delves into the ideas of repetition and absolution of sin. Watch the video above or here on Youtube.

For more on the story behind the new video, Ben explains below:

“This video is based around hands. Dirtying ones hands, blood on the hands, and cleansing ones hands of sin are the themes that drive the imagery in this video. I saw Richard Serra’s ‘Hand Catching Lead’ video at the Metropolitan museum in NY a few years ago. Despite all the monumental works, this small raw video stuck with me the most. Something about the simplicity about looking at the artist’s own hands, the realness was very intense. It is Serra’s work that provides the visual inspiration behind this video.

“The compulsion of washing ones hands – absolution of sin – is very powerful. This compulsive behavior, regardless of the context, can relate to all of us. This one-take sequence that closes the video is not only physically demanding, but also very challenging to the viewer. Repetition, the common thread of the droney nature of Suuns’ music, plays tricks on our sense of time and drives the fanatical and compulsive themes of the video to the edge of our tolerance.”

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Songs: Ohia ‘Didn’t It Rain’ Deluxe Reissue On Dec. 2, Hear Alternate Unheard Version Of “Ring the Bell”

Today we are pleased to announce the reissue of Songs: Ohia‘s Didn’t It Rain, with an expanded 2XLP/CD deluxe edition featuring unreleased demos including an alternate unheard version of “Ring the Bell” above or here on Youtube / Soundcloud. The expanded edition will be out on Secretly Canadian on December 2nd.

You can pre-order the special deluxe bundle including 2xLP, 2xCD, download codes, and a giant 27″ x 39″ Didn’t It Rain cinema style poster via SC Distribution. You can also pre-order the re-issue via iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

Didn’t It Rain is Jason Molina‘s first perfect record. Recorded live in a single room, with no overdubs and musicians creating their parts on the fly, the overall approach to the recording was nothing new for Molina. But something in the air and execution of Didn’t It Rain clearly sets it apart from his existing body of work. His albums had always been full of space, but never had Molina sculpted the space as masterfully as he does on Didn’t It Rain. The creaks and scraping of strings are all part of the Didn’t It Rain choir. So when Molina hoots for another chorus during the album’s eponymous opening gambit, it feels less an off-the-cuff call, and more an essential piece of the tone and structure. Midway through the same song, we hear the long, low woosh of a passing bus. Distant traffic has forever been a trope of lo-fi, but here, it is a pristine woosh. The highest of fidelity and sure of purpose. The same can be said for Molina’s always remarkable voice, here settling into a matured, assured, and subtly lowered tenor. It all adds up to something near in mood to Neil Young‘s song “On The Beach,” and maybe even Boz Scagg‘s 1969 self-titled album laid to tape at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio.

Didn’t It Rain is an ode to the Midwest Rust Belt under which Molina was born and Molina’s newfound Chicago home. When we move to a new place, we must truly confront all our own weaknesses and strengths, and Molina puts that all on the table with this one. The album’s triple-threat center pieces come by way of “Ring The Bell,” “Cross The Road, Molina,” and “Blue Factory Flame.” Strung together, they present clearly Molina’s specific set of mythological symbols that had been forming on previous recordings. But the journey across these three songs – with their circling serpents, their neon-flame wreathed moons, their swinging blades, their debilitating emptiness – also feels like a cleansing, a catharsis, a sort of primal therapy.

This expanded reissue presents Molina’s home demos of the record, eight previously unreleased tracks, complete with a distant playground full of children chiming in the background for a few songs. The glorious juxtaposition of Molina’s songs’ desolation and the blissful playing of children is about as haunting as it gets. The expanded edition of Didn’t It Rain will see release via Secretly Canadian on December 2nd.

Critics have weighed in on the new release:

“Kastlander has a voice as warm and fragile as any in independent music, but she’s just as inclined to infuse it with hip-hop’s braggadocio.”

The FADER

“… when they’re able to scale that wall and dance with the stars, the album’s a treat.”

Pitchfork

“The new album flexes huge melodies and big feelings, and every song feels like a finely sculpted top-40 single in a more hazed-out reality than the one we currently occupy.”

WATCH // Woman’s Hour Share Video For ‘In Stillness We Remain’ Dir. By Fiona Burgess, Play Green Man Festival Saturday

Ahead of a few festival dates, Woman’s Hour keeps it coming with their new video for “In Stillness We Remain” off of their latest album Conversations. Premiering via Noisey this morning, the video was choreographed by and features six dancers from the Queen Katherine School, a secondary school where band members Fiona Burgess, Will Burgess, and Nicolas Graves attended as teenagers. Watch the video above or here on YouTube / Vevo.

From singer Fiona Burgess, who also directed:
Making this film was a wonderful nostalga trip; walking along our old school corridors, encountering some of our teachers from back in the day, recalling how self-conscious we all felt about ourselves and the world. By focusing on a real group of teenage friends, the dancers in this film manage to capture all the awkwardness of growing up, but they also reflect what young people pick up from mainstream pop culture and try to emulate. Their movements are clumsy and idiosyncratic, but it’s these imperfections that I love.

Pick up the new album via iTunes, Amazon, SC Distribution / deluxe bundle, and your local record store.

ALBUM RELEASE // Anand Wilder And Maxwell Kardon ‘Break Line The Musical’ Out Now In North America

Break Line The Musical is a new project from Anand Wilder, (Yeasayer co-founder, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist) that he created with Maxwell Kardon and a community of friends. The new album harkens back to rock concept albums of the early 70′s with this following the classic arc of lost love, betrayal, and pride.

Get the new album via iTunes, Amazon, SC Distribution, and from your local record store.

This record has been in the works since 2008 when Anand and Maxwell put together a band with Ira Wolf Tuton (Yeasayer) on bass and Christopher Powell (Man Man) on drums. Britt Myers (Charlift, Yeasayer, Passing Strange) then assisted with recording while they stayed up late experimenting with sounds and arrangements. Also included on the notable roster is Austin Fisher (Suckers), Haley Dekle (Dirty Projectors), James Richardson (MGMT), Chris Keating (Yeasayer), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), and Aku Orraca-Tetteh (Dragons of Zynth).

Praise from the press:

“‘Wedding Day’ … unfolds via a series of playground field recordings, bird sounds and backwards-masked tones before forging ahead as a paisley-print tapestry of flute toots, guitar strums and triangle taps.”

- Exclaim!

“A slow waltzing bit of jazz (strummy guitars, staccato horns) instantly builds in emotion and intensity, reach the epic and churning levels normally associated with ’70s arena rock. Assisting the pair is MGMT’s own James Richardson, who stokes the musical flames with a truly sweltering guitar solo.”

Consequence of Sound

“The retro folk-styled “Wedding Day” seemed to match the rural 1950s-set plot, which they described as a labor conflict in a Pennsylvania coal town. But the latest single “I’m to Blame” has thrown our pastoral assumptions totally out of balance — but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “

ARTIST ANNOUNCE // Electric Youth Releases “Innocence” Video Dir. By Ivan Grbovic, Signs To Secretly Canadian

Secretly Canadian is thrilled to welcome Electric Youth to the family. Based out of Toronto, the electronic pop duo includes Austin Garrick and Bronwyn Griffin. Their song “A Real Hero” (a collaboration with French producer College) became wildly popular after its appearance in the 2011 film “Drive,” directed by Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. The song, which has surpassed 18 million plays on YouTube, is only a preview of what is to come.

In late 2013, Electric Youth teased a new album including the pulsing track “Innocence.” In the new video for the track directed by Ivan Grbovic we see the the music at its most grand and cinematic, but still very human. “Innocence” will be included on Electric Youth‘s debut album, due this fall. Watch the video above or here on the band’s YouTube / Vevo. More info coming soon.

For more info on the band follow them on Twitter, Facebook, and their Soundcloud.

Directed by Frank and Jane, the video follows the beautiful monochrome aesthetic shown by the band on previous videos and their album art. The new video is their take on ‘Group Primary Accumulation’ (1973), a performance piece by the celebrated American choreographer Trisha Brown. “We are four non-dancers engaged in a conversation with ourselves. Separately together. The video highlights this isolation. Four people silently moving in sync.” says lead singer Fiona Burgess, who came across the piece while touring in America earlier this year.

Love Me, the highly anticipated new album from Tomas Barfod will be out next week but you can stream the full record right now at Pitchfork Advance. Pre-order Love Me now via SC Distribution, iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

On the remix Tomas writes:

“I like the idea about selecting remixers that are connected to me, either in personal or in the music. I really needed a proper house mix for Busy Baby, and while I was thinking about which international artist I should pick, suddenly KANT posted one of his songs on Facebook, where we are ‘friends’. So I realized that I didn’t need to search the world, I could just look within my network. I think Kant did an world-class remix and besides it was a pleasure dealing with such a talented and easy producer…no managers or labels where needed this time – just a facebook-chat.”

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Anand Wilder And Maxwell Kardon Share “Wedding Day” From New Album ‘Break Line The Musical’ Out July 15th In North America

Break Line The Musical is a new project from Anand WilderYeasayer co-founder, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist) that he created with Maxwell Kardon and a community of friends. The new album harkens back to rock concept albums of the early 70′s with this following the classic arc of lost love, betrayal, and pride.

LISTEN // Tomas Barfod Shares Beacon’s Remix of “Busy Baby”, New Album ‘Love Me’ Out June 10th

Tomas Barfod has shared Beacon‘s [Ghostly International] remix of latest single “Busy Baby”. Listen to the remix above or on our Soundcloud / YouTube.

Pre-order Love Me now via SC Distribution, iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

On the remix Tomas writes:

“It’s always fun to get a remix back from somebody, it’s like unwrapping a present when you receive the link for the file, and wait for the music to download. Sometimes the remixer totally messes the original, other times it’s a new little peace of art. Beacon succeded to change the track completely yet keeping a lot of the elements from the original, which is a really hard task. I’m thrilled about their approach.”

Beacon adds:

“A bit about our process: We like to send mixed messages to our synths…confuse them in a way. We will have the pc tell them to do one thing and simultaneously the internal computer inside the synths do another. The results always tend to surprise us and take chords in interesting directions. But its also frustrating and unreliable. Multiple takes, fingers crossed hoping the synth does something special. that’s the treatment we gave Barfod’s chords. you hear it start our remix, notes we’ve chopped and wrangled, dancing between the L and R mix. When it came to the vocals, we decided to use Nina’s voice more as an instrument, floating around, landing every once in a while to check in.

Also today on Vice‘s site THUMP you can hear an exclusive mix Tomas made featuring his favorite house classics. Listen to the mix on their Soundcloud here.

SONGS: OHIA // Label Co-Founder Ben Swanson On Jason Molina And SC200: Record Store Day Exclusive Box Set ‘Journey On: Collected Singles’

Tomorrow, April 19th, is Record Store Day across the world and we are marking this years’ RSD with the Songs: Ohia Exclusive Record Store Day Box Set Journey On: Collected Singles [more info here]. This release has already been featured in RSD must-have lists on KEXP, Pitchfork, and now Secretly Canadian label co-founder Ben Swanson has a few words on Jason Molina and this special box set.

– - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –

Words by Ben Swanson, Secretly Canadian Label Co-Founder

We’ve been talking about this release for years with Jason. At first he was reluctant, as he always kept his eyes on the road ahead, never in the rearview. For those of us that have been long time fans, this had always been one of the most exciting and exhausting aspects of Jason’s live shows. Limited set time was ever given to the current release’s songs, and rarely were you treated to the “hits”; instead Jason used the stage as his workshop where he would hone the nuances of his early morning sketches. As a fan, it was a treat to watch the new songs evolve over a tour until finally – usually somewhere in the middle of the run – they were laid to tape, often live in the studio, and then quickly jettisoned from the set list. The work was done, time to move on.

For Jason, each recording had its own life, and, regardless of its scope, there was something sacred to which the tunes were ultimately presented. Besides, there were new Ghosts to discover, or Wolves to ride, or Moons to bleed (go ahead and choose your favorite Molina metaphor).

Early on Jason imbued the label with the preciousness of the release and we largely agreed…in spirit. However it could be maddening that some of these gems never got their due. Only to be enjoyed by the 1,000 people that bought the 7″, and the super fans that traded high quality FLACs of shitty vinyl rips.

As fans, we loved the new stuff, but we were in love with the old stuff.

Eventually, Jason relented and began to entertain the notion of revisiting these semi-lost recordings. Maybe he was far enough away from the material where he could see the merit in taking a peek back. Or maybe he was just sick of us asking.

Either way, this collection follows Jason’s career throughout his Songs: Ohia period, from 1994 to 2000; from Oberlin, OH, to Bloomington, IN, to Chicago and back again.

I was first introduced to Jason’s music through the Freedom 7″ on Palace Records. My brother, Chris, had sent me a dub of it during my last year in high school during the period we began talking about starting a record label. The 7″ was otherworldly and Jason seemed untouchable. I don’t remember exactly how, but eventually my brother Chris tracked down an email address and we huddled around the computer. We had nothing to offer but our enthusiasm. It feels naive to think about now – we found his email! he wrote back! – but in the mid-90s, this was new terrain.

Through a handful of emails that were – much like Jason himself – short and cryptic, Jason mentioned he was playing an in-store at Adult Crash in New York, and if we came, he’d give us the master for our first 7″. To anyone that’s familiar with Jason, they know he appreciates hard work, and whereas a normal person would’ve sent the DAT through the mail, there was an implicit challenge in inviting us to New York. If we put in the work and showed up, we’d get the tape. And what did we know? Fourteen hours later we arrived in NYC to collect the tape of what would eventually be the One Pronunciation of Glory 7″.

There’s a similar history to each of the songs on this collection and lets be clear, not all of these songs are gems. However, each song is a snapshot of Jason at various points in the first half of his career. They’re Jason at his most loose, his most feisty; always inviting new friends to play. He was quick and generous when it came to recording. To Jason, it was situational – with the right ingredients, the right temperature, and, if the humidity is just right, you can catch that spark. He was after instinct, not training. He’d create structures for the musicians of the day, and line them with booby traps. It was a maddening but effective trick.

Anyway, I’m glad he finally relented. It was a rare treat to go through these old tapes and an incredible experience to watch a master grow into his craft.

WATCH // Tomas Barfod Shares ‘Happy’ Video Via Noisey Premiere, ‘Pulsing’ EP Out Now

We’ve all danced alone at home to our favorite song. WATCH // Woman’s Hour Share “Her Ghost” Video, Single Out Now Digitally, New April EU Dates With Metronomy

Continuing previous Woman’s Hour visual collaborations with artists Broomberg and Chanarin (directed ‘To The End’ and ‘Darkest Place’), the new video for the band’s new single “Her Ghost” interprets lead singer Fiona Burgess’ lyrics into sign language filmed in one long, beautiful shot.

On the conception of the video Fiona says:

“After seeing two young people signing to each other in the street, I became interested in how deaf people communicate, particularly how they engage with music. Vilma, the deaf actor in our video, signs the song as a personal response to the lyrics, rather than a literal word-for-word translation. The process has enabled us to celebrate this form of engagement with music; language as a form of dance.”

ALBUM RELEASE // Gardens & Villa’s ‘Dunes’ Out Now, US Tour Starts Friday

Gardens & Villa‘s second album, Dunes, is out today worldwide on Secretly Canadian.

The five members of the band, Adam Rasmussen, Chris Lynch, Dusty Ineman, Levi Hayden and Shane McKillop, left their hometown and base of sunny Santa Barbara to record with Tim Goldsworthy (Cut Copy, DFA Records, Hercules & Love Affair) at Key Club, a converted locksmith’s building in Benton Harbor, MI. Ripped out of their usual environment into a cold midwestern locale, the band finds a new voice on Dunes. The band brings their catchy rhythms and bold synth lines from previous records but continues developing a richer sound now experimenting with unique gear including Sly Stone‘s custom-built Flickinger recording console and direction from Goldsworthy.

Listen to tracks “Bullet Train” and “Colony Glen” above or here on our Soundcloud.

Dunes is now available from iTunes, Amazon, SC Distribution, and your local record store.

Early reviews on Dunes:

“Goldsworthy has built a stratum of battered, creaky atmosphere atop Gardens & Villa’s already richly layered mood”

- SLANT Magazine | ★★★★

“Ultimately, Dunes is a collection of tracks which showcases Gardens & Villa’s distinctly original twist on the well-worn and much abused genre of synth-pop. It’s fun, it’s clever and it’s mature–electro-pop for adults.”

- The Line Of Best Fit

“Compared to their debut album, Dunes marks a step up in the band’s sound.”

WATCH // Tomas Barfod Premieres New “Pulsing” Video, EP Out February 18th

Today we share Tomas Barfod‘s first music video for the track “Pulsing”. Directed by Cherise Payne (dir. videos for Sampha, Apache Beat), the video shows the intersection of teenage love and the local meat market over Barfod’s constantly building track featuring the vocals of collaborator Nina K.

On the video, director Cherise Payne says:

The first thing that struck me about Tomas’ track was that the melody and vocal were so beautiful but there was an underlying darkness in the bass and the beat. I wanted to explore this idea of beauty and darkness in the video by presenting a series of contrasts. The blood and gore of a meat market is contrasted with the passion and skill a butcher lends to their work, much like an artist working on a sculpture. The haze of a young couple exploring the city after a night out is contrasted with the the focus and bustle of a busy early morning market

Watch the video for “Pulsing” above or here on our YouTube.

If you missed it, we previously shared his track “Happy” featuring the vocals of Eddie Chacon (of Charles & Eddie). Listen to it above or on our Soundcloud / YouTube here.

LISTEN // Tomas Barfod Shares New Track, “Happy (feat. Eddie Chacon), EP Out February 18th

Today, Tomas Barfod shares new track Happy featuring the vocals of Eddie Chacon (of Charles & Eddie). Listen to it above or on our Soundcloud / YouTube here.

On the song, Eddie wrote:

The lyrics to Happy came about differently than any song I have written before. One day while driving in Los Angeles with my wife we were talking about a person’s natural disposition. She labeled me an eternal optimist. I thought about that for a second before I replied that this world is hard on artists. In my 35 year music career starting in the late 70′s in San Francisco and leading up until now that I had seen so many of my great musician friends slip away due to aids, drugs, car accidents, suicide and even santaria but that I had decided I was gonna be happy. My wife was moved by this and insisted I make a song out of it.

I’ve attended many funerals in my life and I always think the same thing: Any day above ground is a good day.

ALBUM STREAM // Luke Temple Releases New Video For “Florida” On MOKB, New Album ‘Good Mood Fool’ Streaming Now on HypeMachine

Today the new video for “Florida” premiered on My Old Kentucky Blog! The video, which was featured in VEVO‘s Indie Wednesday showcase, is directed by Kris Moyes who has worked with Grizzly Bear, Kirin J Callinan, Sia, and more. Watch the video above or on VEVO here and then read Luke’s artist statement on the video.

On the video, Temple has released the following artist statement:

“There have been 70,000+ deaths related to the Mexican drug cartels since 2006.

The Unites States is, by far, the largest market for cocaine use in the world with roughly 16% of its population using the drug.
New Zealand is second at roughly 4%
Mexico itself hovers around 2%.
They supply it, we buy it.

Being a musician I have been around my share of the stuff and can say that there is an absolute disconnect from the reality of what is being supported by the purchase of cocaine.

Our privilege and relative comfort can make it hard to look outside of our immediate gratification.

It seems almost impossible to exist without being an indirect aid to the exploitation of those less fortunate but we can at least start with the glaringly obvious.

It’s absolutely not worth just being able to party for another few hours.”

WATCH // Porcelain Raft Premieres First Single “Think Of The Ocean” With Video, Reveals Album Cover And Tracklist

Porcelain Raft premiered the song “Think Of The Ocean” today, from the upcoming Permanent Signal release, with visuals also by Mauro Remiddi (recording under the PR moninker since 2010). Permanent Signal is a phrase that symbolizes a phone line that is without a connection for a long period of time, a state Remiddi related to while being on tour, away from friends and family. Recorded at the end of 2012, Permanent Signal found Remiddi selling the instruments he used to record his full-length debut, Strange Weekend, in order to “start with a new color palette.” Using new tools and sounds, Remiddi also enlisted the help of Jonny Rogoff (Yuck) on drums, Darby Cicci (Antlers) on bass and Gaspar Claus (collaborator of Sufjan Stevens and The National) on cello.
