Joyful Noise Releases Limited Edition Marmoset LP Box Set

We’re thrilled to share the news that next month our friends at Joyful Noise will release a vinyl box set celebrating the career of SC veterans Marmoset. September marks the 10-year anniversary of the band’s extraordinary second album Record In Red (which, according to Pitchfork, “ranks among the best albums released by Secretly Canadian”). In honor of the occasion Joyful Noise is reissuing all four of Marmoset’s full-length albums on vinyl, including SC releases Record in Red, Today It’s You and Florist Fired, along with 2009′s Tea Tornado.

The LPs will be released in a limited edition box set, packaged in a custom-built wooden box, elaborately screen-printed, hand-numbered, and limited to 100 copies. Officially released on September 13, the box set is now available for pre-order! The box set also includes an instant download of the band’s entire catalog, a 40 page booklet, and four digital EPs of outtakes from each album totally 24 unreleased bonus tracks.

Exitmusic’s Spooky, Romantic Video for “The Hours”

EXITMUSIC’s Stereogum-premiered, Will Joines-directed video for “The Hours,” a song from their forthcoming From Silence EP, is a perfect primer for the band’s sound. It’s both ghostly and powerful; gorgeous and foreboding. The song itself leans toward the powerful and anthemic side of that sound, as it’s glacial, ethereal post-rock builds and builds, a thousand cosmic clocks filling every gap.

And as Stereogum said regarding the video: “EXITMUSIC’s new dreamscape of a music video, ‘The Hours,’ has all sorts of spooky, romantic shit that Northrup Frye would be hyped about. Bleary, stark visions, twins, cascading smoke, spectral textures that gives the slow burn of a song a fitting visual counterpoint.”

Meanwhile, the band has a handful of live dates coming up, which you can see HERE.

Urban Outfitters Premieres the Video for The War on Drugs’ “Come To The City”

The War on Drugs – “Come to the City” (Official Music Video) from Urban Outfitters on Vimeo.

Today, Urban Outfitters premiered the video for The War on Drugs’ charging, triumphant “Come to the City” from the band’s excellent forthcoming sophomore album Slave Ambient. It follows a gang of Los Angelenas doing some wilding on the outskirts of LA. The video was produced by Urban Outfitters and directed by Peter J. Brant. Video Fun Fact: One of the women who appears in the video is a former resident of our hometown, Bloomington, Ind.

Today through the release of Slave Ambient, UO will also be exclusively hosting a stream of the entire album. You can hear why UK’s Uncut, in a five-star review of the album, said: “Granduciel’s burgeoning compositional skills and his vast attention to intricately wrought sonic structures make Slave Ambient rich with things money alone can’t buy — wit, imagination, ambition, excitement, that kind of thing. It’s a thrill. Something’s happening wherever you turn on tracks that are dense with detail and brilliant accumulations of incident, but never overwrought or too busy, sheer grace their common link.”

Get Bobb Trimble’s Lost 1983 LP ‘The Crippled Dog Band’

Bobb Trimble’s third album, The Crippled Dog Band, is now available for the first time as CD/LP/digital download/cassette from Yoga Records. Recorded in 1983 with a Worcester, MA group of teenage boys and named after a local three-legged dog, the album has been lost for nearly three decades since Bobb dumped the 500-count LP pressing into an office park dumpster.

All of this would be nothing more than a typically weird footnote to the Bobb Trimble legend, except for the fact that The Crippled Dog Band is very different from, but every bit as remarkable and brilliant as Iron Curtain Innocence and Harvest Of Dreams. Having proved himself, if only to himself, this is where Bobb stops chasing glass menagerie fantasies of perfection, tempers the dread of his first two records, and reconnects with his DIY roots. This unique collaboration between “the greatest psychedelic musician of the 80s” and his scrappy acolytes yields pure rock and roll and the result is raw, crazy, and infectiously exciting.

Exitmusic Share Powerful Noir Video for “The Sea”

A few weeks ago we shared news of NYC duo Exitmusic joining the Secretly Canadian roster, and gave fans a glimpse into their work with an mp3 for “The Sea.” Now Exitmusic’s Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church have created an appropriately dark, yet etherial, video for the song. The video was directed and produced by the band using footage from Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1975 film The Mirror.

Watch The War On Drugs’ Kaleidoscopic Video for “Baby Missiles”

Philadelphia’s The War On Drugs’ sophomore album of mile-high rock anthems, Slave Ambient, is due out August 16 on Secretly Canadian. We’ve shared with you the album’s instant classic, part Springsteen, part motorik anthem, “Baby Missiles” and now you can watch the song come to life with its video. Like the song itself, and much of Slave Ambient for that matter, the video has the same steering wheel-tapping movement, windows down, feeling the breeze on a summer day vibe. The video premiered at Pitchfork this morning.

The “Baby Missiles” video is culled and edited from The War On Drugs’ main man Adam Granduciel’s collected of super 8 film footage. The kaleidoscopic work throughout finds its raw source material in Granduciel’s experimental medium format photography, the very same exposed film featured on the artwork for Slave Ambient. The video is directed by Labour and produced by Greencard Pictures.

Look for The War On Drugs on tour in the US and in Europe this fall. All of the dates are listed HERE.

Secretly Canadian Welcomes Exitmusic, Hear New Track “The Sea”

Today we’re happy to welcome New York City duo Exitmusic — comprised of Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church — to the Secretly Canadian roster!

The first recorded output from the band in the form of a chilling song called “The Sea” is debuting now on Pitchfork. Mixing dark, pulsing bass, wailing vocals and swirling washes of sound, “The Sea” is the perfect introduction to Exitmusic’s gorgeous little world.

Gardens & Villa’s Into the Woods Video, MP3 for “Star Fire Power”

Here’s a video of Gardens & Villa performing “Black Hills” in Portland this April. The video bloggers at INTO THE WOODS.TV had kind things to say about the band and their self titled album, due July 5:

The record presents a seamless distillation of retro synth-wave, avant-garde world music, and innovative art-pop; all glazed in sparkling California sunlight. Back in Oregon during a recent tour, G&V met us downtown the morning after a well-received set supporting Hosannas at Rontoms. A golden warmth fell on the room as the band rolled through Black Hills, the vintage-funk opener from [their debut.]

Gardens & Villa Make Their Cinematic Debut in Black Hills Video

Gardens & Villas’ “Black Hills,” from the band’s self-titled debut (out July 5), is thick-but-nimble, low-key West Coast new wave. The video for “Black Hills,” directed by Ulysses//Onassis, is an adventure filmed in the wilderness of rural Oregon. It’s stark black & white cinematography is a nice juxtapose from the lushness of the song, though it’s no less dreamy. We find the men of Gardens & Villa portraying a gang of drunken, backwoods greasers who hunt down a small, near-albino child and his glowing, magical alien crystal thing. It’s part Stand By Me, part E.T., part Night of the Hunter and cool all over.

In June, Gardens & Villa embark on a massive summer touring schedule — running June through mid-August — that will see them traversing North America twice over, sharing dates with Generationals, Craft Spells and Foster the People. As we’ve seen a various spots on the internet, this is live show not to be missed. See all the upcoming dates HERE.

Today Antony and the Johnsons premiered a new video for “Swanlights,” directed by Antony’s sister Sara Hegarty. The video contains excerpts from the forthcoming film The Last Hymn featuring Sierra Paris. Antony has described the concept of swanlights as “the reflection of light on the surface of the water at night and the moment when a spirit jumps out of a body and turns into a violet ghost.”

In other Antony news, electronic music duo Matmos has joined the team for the forthcoming production of “The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic” which includes Antony, Marina Abramovic, Willem Dafoe, and Robert Wilson. Swearing At Motorists Release Postcards From A Drinking Town (Collected Singles from ’96-’02)

SC112full

Critics wisely referred to Swearing At Motorists as “The Two Man Who” and anyone who was fortunate to see them live would surely concur. The band developed a reputation for being one of the most energetic charismatic American bands, both on stage and record. Their songs are characterized by emphatic, crunching tonic chords and emotive vocals and the recordings were always raw. A perfect combination of compact stadium rock sing-alongs and lucid love songs that portray a character at the mercy of his own destiny. It all began in the early 1990′s in the bedrooms and basements of Dayton, Ohio amongst the hazy murk of the Midwest American lo-fi scene — a movement championed by neighbors Guided By Voices as well as Sebadoh, Supreme Dicks, and Pavement. We here at Secretly Canadian have combed through our libraries and are proud to offer a comprehensive collection of Swearing At Motorists’ 7-inch and compilation tracks from this exciting era. You can sample “Feeling Transparent” from Songs from a Drinking Town HERE.

This compilation is available in digital format through any of your favorite online retailers. You can also purchase a download HERE.

Over the weekend they got some field time of their own playing soccer with local teens at the first day of a week long soccer camp in Cape Town, SA. The band also performed an acoustic set during the camp’s pre-registration, along with their fellow South African artist HHP.

The camp is hosted by Ethan Zohn, founder of Grassroot Soccer and former professional soccer player. Antony’s Obituary for Kazuo Ohno, Founder of Japanese Butoh Dance

SC194fullKazuo Ohno, a founder of Japanese modern dance, passed away last week on June 1. You might recognize this image of Ohno during a 1977 performance as the cover of Antony & the Johnsons’ 2009 album The Crying Light. Below is an obituary for Ohno written by Antony which appeared in the London newspaper The Guardian yesterday.

Kazuo Ohno, who has died aged 103, was one of the pioneers of butoh, Japan’s striking contribution to contemporary dance. Butoh, which incorporated elements of existentialism, surrealism, German expressionism, kabuki theatre and eastern spiritual thought, was a reaction in part to the horrors of the second world war.
