LOVE FOR BIGFOOT

This is a feel-good hug of an album, which will transport you to the care-free, peace and love West Coast in a matter of minutes. And it’s much cheaper than a flight. This is Fake DIY

Bigfoot is bittersweet; cheerful and charming in small doses, and – as that’s all you get – it’s time well spent. The Line Of Best Fit

Cayucas’ Bigfoot is a short and sweet instant charmer. The album’s eight songs each hover around the 3 and a half-minute mark, never overstaying their welcome. The sound is relentlessly warm and tropical, with rickety high-pitched keys, light and breezy percussion, and calm, echoed vocals.Pretty Much Amazing

VIDEO // Taken By Trees Shares New “Only You” Video & Remix

Taken By Trees is back with a new video for “Only You.” Directed by Armen Harootun, the video sets out to explore the themes of love and sensual joy. Watch above. You can download the song now at iTunes and Amazon.

“To me the idea of the video came from the resistance of another idea. I became tired of watching videos of the same thing: a man chasing a woman, or visa versa. It seemed appropriate to consider love as something that doesn’t have to be between a man and a woman. The video is a showcase, not a demonstration of that idea.”Armen Harootun

In addition to video, we have a new “Only You” remix to share. Created by LA producer Belief (EI-P, Murs, Kate Boy), the track slowly builds over the tropical beat to a synthy dance jam. Stream below.

Remembering Jason Molina – “A Balladeer of Heartbreak”

It has been 17 days since we lost Jason Molina. As much as he meant to all of us here at Secretly, we recognize he meant just as much to you. The support and love we have experienced over the last couple of weeks has been tremendous and we thank all of you for that. We want to share some tid bits we’ve received – please see below.

_______________________________________________

First, all of the material Jason released on CD or vinyl is available for streaming on Magnolia Electric Co.’s Bandcamp for a limited time. Revisit his incredible body of work. Second, the Magnolia site has started a forum for friends to gather their thoughts – join in.

The Avett Brothers posted a beautiful cover of “Hammer Down” along with the words: “His music has always been, and will continue to be, an inspiration to us.” Watch above. Here’s the original.

The Wave PicturesThe Songs of Jason Molina / a covers tribute album
“The music was bleak and un-showy, though Jason was dressed in an inappropriately fancy Nashville style suit. He had a guitar sound that rang like a bell. The songs cut straight to the core. The voice hit me in the belly.” – David Tattersall (of The Wave Pictures) after seeing Jason at End Of The Road Festival

“I never got a chance to tell him how that first album of his opened my mind. I was sixteen, I put some american dollars in an envelope and sent it over the sea. Two weeks later it arrived, I didn’t know music could sound that close. I followed his every move for years, bought every little strange seven inch and “tour only” CD. I’m sitting here now with those records spread out across the floor. I never grew tired of Jason’s songs because they don’t belong to a time but rather a place.”Jens Lekman, entry posted on March 18, 2013

CFCF with a beautiful take on “Red Comet Dust” – downloadable via Bandcamp, with proceeds going to Jason’s wife

“He was a genius at turning a phrase and making it into something more than the words in it. Jason was almost supernaturally prolific, and several times I watched him write an album’s worth of songs in a weekend, recording them on the spot.”Steve Albini

Finally, at the top of the post, you’ll notice the Molina Map, originally created by William Schaff as a gift to help Jason through troubled times. Graveface will pair the map with a CD of Molina covers titled Weary Engine Blues. The album will feature John Vanderslice, Mark Kozelek, Damien Jurado, Brown Bird, Scout Niblet, Will Oldham and many more musicians. All proceeds will go to pay Jason’s medical expenses. Listen to Kozelek’s “It’s Easier Now” cover below.

Welcome to Tuesday. Nite Jewel recently joined forces with Droop-E, a rapper and producer out of the Bay Area. What we have now is the new track “N the Traffic,” from Droop-E’s forthcoming EP Hungry and Humble (details at Pitchfork). Listen to the song above!

“…all shimmering, spring water-clear chords and cavernous wobble. It’s both weightless and heavy while avoiding the pitfall of tipping the scale too far in either direction.”PITCHFORK

Ramona has a few tour dates coming up later this month and also in April! See where exactly she will play HERE.

HAPPY RELEASE DAY // Suuns’ ‘Images Du Futur’ Out Now

RELEASE DAY! RELEASE DAY! Suuns’ Images Du Futur is officially available to the world. You can purchase the record online at SC Distribution, iTunes and Amazon! Have a hankering to go pick up the physical record today? Head to your local record store.

Experience Images Du Futur in a live setting! Suuns are on tour now until the end of May, so you have plenty of chances to see them! DATES HERE.

SUUNS – IMAGES DU FUTUR

“Images Du Futur is exciting in a way that few albums manage to be, dangerous and compelling like a first cigarette or fumbled sexual encounter, and nothing here quite seems real: these ten tracks exist in a half-light, a nocturnal fog a step removed from lucid thought. And a long, long way from anything routine.”The Line of Best Fit

“On an album that rarely shakes off its shroud of unease, Suuns paint a pretty bleak picture of all our tomorrows, but their own dazzling ‘…Futur’ looks assured.”NME

“So it is with great excitement that we receive their second LP offering, Images Du Futur, which builds on the ‘Bambi’/'Red Song’ energy and presents us with a refined image of what terrifying power Suuns are capable of.”KEXP

“Images du Futur is a heavy, slow rock album that will be jarring for those expecting big hooks, but it’s also rewarding for anyone willing to formulate their own interpretation.”Montreal Gazette

Early Love for IMAGES DU FUTUR

“The gentle psychedelia of Suuns is perfectly suited to the placid, unsettling visions that vocalist Ben Shemie is singing about here.” -PITCHFORK

“SUUNS is clearly still making music that grabs your insides first and then engages your brain after, just on this one effort, they are doing it in a gentler, more restrained way – like the stroke of a lion’s paw before it unfurls its claws and tears your heart out.” -NOISEY

“…if “Edie’s Dream” is any indication, the foursome will be heading a little deeper down the rabbit hole on their upcoming album, Images Du Futur…Creepy and meditative vocals, delayed guitar, and a spine-tingling sense that some lunatic is patiently waiting around that shadowy corner to stab you in the neck. Fun stuff…” -CHICAGO READER

Do Not Skip This // Richard Swift Profiled at Stumptown Coffee

What do you get when you mix Richard Swift [the best that ever was/is] and Stumptown Coffee [also deliciously amazing]? A whole lot of awesome, that’s what. Swift recently opened his new show, Mt. Mountains, at one of the Stumptown stores in Portland. To adequately prepare for such an event, the fine coffee folks stopped by his Cottage Grove studio for a peak and a chat. Their report? “…it’s tough to tell which side of mad he’s hollering from.” DARN TOOTIN’. We also learn that Swift is a man of many things, some perhaps, that you would never know until NOW.

LSTN // Nightlands Shares “Nico” Track – Three Versions Available

Nightlands follows up release week by sharing the original, instrumental and vocal-only versions of “Nico,” a track off the recently released Oak Island. Premiering at ArtInfo, the song is one of the more experimental ventures off the record. You can stream all three versions above! While listening, head over to ArtInfo to read the new interview with the ever so eloquent Dave Hartley.

“I kept trying that until I could know exactly what speed to change the tape machine to, to make my voice warped. So when it sounds like I’m singing higher and higher and higher, the tape is slowing more and more. I got pretty experimental with the tape machine.” – Dave Hartley on “Nico”

See Nightlands live! Dave takes the stage at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory on February 12! Then it is off to tour the rest of the States in March! Dates HERE!

WATCH // Nightlands Shares New “I Fell In Love With A Feeling” Video, Releases Sophomore Album – ‘Oak Island’

Dave Hartley, the man behind Nightlands and bassist for The War On Drugs, releases his sophomore album Oak Island. The record is a sci-fi exploration of love – a journey only available in an aural space. It is easy to fall in love with this album and after a listen or two, you’ll find it increasingly hard to go. A certain curiosity grows into everlasting fascination. Don’t believe me? Start with the new video and let us know how it goes (watch above).

If you are late to game and did not pre-order the record, get your copy now – available at SC Distribution, local record stores and iTunes!

Oak Island Oak Island Oak Island

“The pairing of these beautifully harmonized vocals with drum beats that go back and forth between a lazy laid back afternoon day and the busy decent into night life give Oak Island a sense of late 1970s summer touched with golden sunlight.”The Vinyl District

“Oak Island is both an untamed beast and an inviting fantasy world worth inhabiting.”eMusic

“So it goes on Oak Island, 35 minutes of romantic and robotic soft rock, a crush mixtape for the Uncanny Valley….it’s a fantastic accompaniment for winter: so much of the digitally processed and pitch-shifted guitar shimmers like tinsel, the percussion jingles, nylon strings, and dulcimers contribute to a mix that’s thick and boozy as eggnog.”PITCHFORK

VIDEO VIDEO // Cayucas Premiere “High School Lover” at SPIN, Announce Debut Album ‘BIGFOOT’ – Out April 30

Cayucas are coming at you with their awesome new video for “High School Lover,” starring lead singer Zach Yudin and his band: Ben Yudin on bass (twin brother to Zach), Banah Winn on keys and Casey Wojtalewicz on drums. Missing in the action is guitar player Christian Koons. Although the video isn’t a complete narrative, Director Cameron Dutra called on the song’s origin when putting it all together. He tells us “‘High School Lover’ is about a girl who would write Zach love letters, yet he would never respond despite actually liking her back. I tried to abstract the idea of a high school girl’s notebook with doodles and sketches into stop motion graphics and titles.” Watch above!

“High School Lover” is found on Cayucas’s debut album, Bigfoot – out officially on April 30! Check out the album artwork above and the tracklisting below! Bigfoot was produced by none other than Richard Swift (record at his studio too!).

WATCH // SUUNS Premiere “Edie’s Dream” Music Video at NOISEY, Announce Spring Tour Dates

VICE’s Noisey brings you the new music video for SUUNS’ “Edie’s Dream.” Directed by SUUNS themselves, the video follows a mysterious girl through the Quebec woods. It’s the same area where the band spent time writing and recording Images Du Futur. SUUNS tell us,”At first, ‘Edie’s Dream’ started as a kind of nightmare, with burial themes and the cold and lonely woods. But gradually, it melted into a kind of bittersweet daydream. Edie is stunning, she is family to the band and at only 13, she carries herself with the poise and confidence of someone who understands the music, understands the cold, understands dreaming and its different layers.” WATCH ABOVE!

LSTN // Jens Lekman Releases Brand New Song – “Olivia & Maddy”

Jens Lekman has a brand new song for your listening pleasure. Tis no ordinary song; the backstory to this diddy is quite the tale. During Hurricane Sandy last November, Jens Lekman’s pianist, Jonas, was stuck in New York City with no way of getting to the West Coast to resume touring. Jens reached out to the world, asking if anyone could help get Jonas to Boston, where he could catch a flight. Two girls, Oliva and Maddy (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU), ended up driving Jonas to Boston and in return for their kindness, Jens said he would write them a song! He’s made good on his promise and shared his new track, “Olivia & Maddy” – listen below! Read more about this heart-warming act on Jens’s blog, Small Talk.

SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT // The War On Drugs Cover The Boss

THIS IS WHY THE INTERNET EXISTS. For without it, many of us would not have opportunity to have our minds blown by this gem of a cover. It is The War On Drugs playing Bruce Springsteen’s “The Ties That Bind,” originally released on The River in 1980. Adam and the gang rocked this song during a two-night stint, one of which was a New Years Eve show, at Johnny Brenda’s. Enjoy above!

Folks from WXPN’s The Key happened to be some of the lucky attendees at the NYE performance, which also featured Purling Hiss and Avery Rosewater. “As streamers popped open, confetti flew and champagne was poured, the band closed the trilogy with an outstanding, moving rendition of “Come To The City,” the centerpiece of their 2011 album ‘Slave Ambient.’ But the show was just getting going.” Read the full review and check out photos HERE.

Happy holidays, folks!

Damien’s Maraqopa is listed at #6 on Rough Trade’s Top 10 Albums of 2012! They call the record a “real high water mark, a remarkable monument to the power of good, honest craft and artistic pursuit; an all too rare occurrence in this age of pop idols, reality stars and hype machine hipsters.”

The Great Basketball Whisperer // Nightlands’ Dave Hartley Writes Sports Column for WXPN

Dave Hartley is a man of many things. You’ve come to know him as the bassist in The War On Drugs and leader of Nightlands – a gentle giant and sci-fi fanatic. Today, we recognize him as the great basketball whisperer. Perhaps we gave you a preview of this when we highlighted Dave’s work for IMPOSE. We are only solidifying his love for the game now. WXPN just announced Dave will head up their new sports column, Top Of The Key. Don’t believe us? Check out that awesome photo of Dave strong arming Baron Davis. GO DAVE!

Tig Notaro takes you into her new NYC home and sits you down for a nice chat. Yes, there are bunk beds. Yes, she is doing better and yes, she talks about her recently released album, LIVE. It’s a really great interview, but why believe us? Watch it all for yourself above or at Pitchfork Weekly.

Listen // Yeasayer Perform Live on WXPN’s World Cafe, Interview Too

Listen up! Yeasayer stopped by Philadelphia’s WXPN for a live in-studio performance and interview with David Dye on World Cafe. The four-song set includes “Longevity, “Demon Road,” “Blue Paper” and an especially grooving take of “Henrietta.” All songs are from their August 2012 release, Fragrant World. Songs and interview available HERE.

“…the band’s latest album, Fragrant World, marks a departure: Density is no longer the name of the game. With its (relatively) spare arrangements, Fragrant World is less about stacking lots of pretty sounds on top of one another, and more about tightening the focus on the individual elements of each song.” – Dave Dye, World Cafe

WATCH // Taken By Trees Perform Live for NPR’s Tiny Desk, Victoria Shares New ‘When The Lights Are Low’ Spotify Playlist

Taken By Trees recently paid a visit to the NPR offices for a charming Tiny Desk performance. Victoria and the boys chose to play “I Want You” and “Only You” and do so wonderfully. Bob Boilen writes, “These songs seem to come from a place somewhere between a dream state and waking life: There’s restraint to the way the players approach this music, almost as if they’re trying not to wake the baby in the other room.” Watch both songs above!

Victoria put together a Spotify playlist, sharing songs that influenced the music and writing of Other Worlds. Stream When The Lights Are Low below!

“I have selected songs that I listened to while I was writing and producing ‘Other Worlds.’ Some songs I took inspiration from for its overall sound like the Augustos Pablo track and “Diamond Head” by The Beach Boys. Other songs I have taken inspiration when it comes to lyrics or just an ambience or feel. For me Other Worlds is a pure love album with a perfect temperature of 29 celsius hanging in the air while laying on a sandy beach.” – Victoria

Dungeonesse Sign to Secretly Canadian, Share Video for First Single

Jenn Wasner and Jon Ehrens bring you their new pop project Dungeonesse and we could not be more stoked to announce them as our newest signee! You’ll recognize Jenn from Wye Oak and Flock of Dimes, Jon Ehrens from White Life and Art Department. Dungeonesse was forged out of a mutual admiration for Top 40 and R&B, as well as the mechanics of what makes a hit song. Jenn says of the project, “Something that Jon and I talk about a lot is the idea of reclaiming pop music; placing it squarely in the hands of, I dunno, say a couple of regular nerds from Baltimore.”

We have the perfect video for their debut single “Drive You Crazy.” Directed by Matthew Yake, the video was filmed at Baltimore’s Nudashank Gallery during a Dungeonesse dance party. Enjoy above or at The Fader. You can expect their debut full-length in 2013. Until then, pick up a copy of the “Drive You Crazy” b/w “Private Party” 12″ at SC Distribution.

Tig Notaro’s ‘LIVE’ Now Available at Amazon & iTunes, New Interview Up Today at The Fader

Originally available at Louis C.K.’s website, Tig Notaro’s new album, LIVE, is now up for purchasing on both Amazon and iTunes. LIVE features Tig’s legendary Largo set, performed earlier this past summer. Over 75,000 copies have already been sold. Don’t wait any longer to get yours. Tig recently moved to New York City from her home of Los Angeles. How’s she handling the move? Well for starters, she’s in the market for a new bunk bed to share with housemate Kyle Dunnigan. Find out what else she’s up to at The Fader – new interview shared today! Read it HERE. Tig, Dunnigan and David Huntsberger head to Brooklyn’s The Bell House on November 17 to perform PROFESSOR BLASTOFF live! Get your tickets.

“Rare is the piece of art (and even rarer the comedy album) that covers this much emotional ground, getting to the point that its sometimes unclear whether the tears are due to laughing so hard or just from the seemingly hopeless pain of it all. Besides being joyously engaging, Notaro’s resounding strength makes this album something that lifts the soul of the listener as much as it entertains.” – TIME

It came as no surprise when we asked Nightlands’ Dave Hartley to curate a Spotify playlist for us, he chose to center his creation around The Beach Boys. In describing the list, Dave shares, “The Beach Boys are much more than the just Pet Sounds and Surf-Car-Girl party songs. Here are twelve strange and beautiful songs that came after.” Perhaps this is a side to the boys we’ve yet to truly take notice. Each of the 12 songs were chosen for good reason and Dave tells you why >>> you’ll find both the descriptions and playlist below. Enjoy! More

It was this weird collision of her being totally candid, and open and honest and an audience that thought they were coming to a comedy show and didn’t know quite what to think or how to react. And pretty far into it, a lot of them still seemed to think it was an act. But, to me, that’s all she was doing – telling her story, detail by detail.”Lance Armstrong

Tig Notaro to Release New Album ‘Live’ via Louis C.K’s Website, Watch Her Recent Interview on Conan

Today is a wonderful day! We’re incredibly happy to announce Tig Notaro will release her new album, LIVE, via Louis C.K.’s website on October 5. It’s the same day Tig will be interviewed by Ira Glass on This American Life. The interview will be accompanied by a 10 minute teaser of her Largo performance, which is the basis of the LIVE album and what Louis C.K. referred to as one of the most masterful performances he’s seen in his 27 working years.

As many of you are probably aware, Tig Notaro was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this summer. She announced the diagnosis at the beginning of her Largo stand-up routine and followed it by taking the audience through the many hardships she encountered during the four months prior to the show. Using a perfect approach of humor and fact, she created an emotional experience, with audience members sharing in tears and laughter the whole way through.

The set went viral after Kira Hesser of The Huffington Post covered the show and walla, Tig then went on to be featured in The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly and more. Tig recently went on Conan, where she shared more on the year’s hardships and a prognosis we can all happily get behind. Watch the Conan appearance above.

WATCH // Exitmusic Premiere Video for “The Modern Age”

Premiering earlier today at The Fader, it’s the new Exitmusic video for “The Modern Age” off the recently released album, Passage. Directed by Daniel Ryan, the haunting video came out of a very real life experience both Aleksa and Devon share. Aleksa says, “Devon and I spent a few years volunteering at wild life rescue centers and, despite all the best efforts of very knowledgeable and compassionate staff members, sometimes an animal would just die from the shock of being captured. Their bodies would shut down because they knew they were not free. It has always stayed with us. That’s where we got the idea for the video.” Watch “The Modern Age” above.

Exitmusic will head out on tour this fall, playing shows across North America and eventually heading to Europe. You’ll find tour dates and ticket links HERE.

More Exitmusic fun –> In case you missed it before, NPR has shared Exitmusic’s live Alternate Side session in their Favorites section, calling Aleksa and Devon’s growing artistic identify “beautifully beguiling and darkly unsettling.” Watch HERE.

EMusic just instated their first site takeover and wouldn’t yah know, it’s for Jens and his new album! Check out his most recent interview HERE and stay tuned for more fun!

“Thirty years since Abba dissolved, their fellow Swedish pop intellectual Jens Lekman presents his own break-up album, and the quite wonderful I Know What Love Isn’t can be safely filed as a masterpiece of the hankies-ready splinter genre. This sophisticated, grown-up pop craftsmanship ought to elevate the 31-year-old from Gothenburg from his present existence as niche indie concern to classic songwriter status. Lekman, like fellow Swede Frida Hyvonen, makes wonderful use of language. “You don’t get over a broken heart,” he professes poignantly on The World Moves On, “you just learn to carry it gracefully.” On the crushing I Want A Pair Of Cowboy Boots, he appears to serve up an echo of Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My Mind. This is the level of company that Lekman belongs in now.” – John Skilbeck, 9/10 – Associated Press

The songs throughout Fragrant World are arrestingly forward-thinking without shying away from invoking music’s rich pageantry.Under The Radar

“This is a record of adventure and texture, an attempt, musically, to conjure up a future we may never actually have. Maybe that is kind of nerdy, but Yeasayer carry it off with style to spare.”Drowned In Sound

Yeasayer rework Gotye’s “Eyes Wide Open” for his upcoming remix EP. Listen exclusively at Rolling Stone.

“…it can be hard to tell where organic sounds end and electronic wizardry begins – a fitting mystery for a band so preoccupied with humanity’s ever-shifting place in the modern world. From the opening seconds of “Fingers Never Bleed” on, its worldview is fully realized, as a stormily off-kilter arrangement induces an immediate sense of woozy foreboding. Even singer Chris Keating doesn’t quite sound of this world: He might channel David Byrne here and there, but he elsewhere explores a mode of expression that can seem animalistic, even alien.”Stephen Thompson, NPR

BLK JKS Featured on Cover of Rolling Stone South Africa

BLK JKS on cover of Rolling Stone you say? Indeed they are! In an article titled BLK JKS: We’re Not Fucking Guns n’ Roses, OK? Notes from the Frontline of Rock’n Roll’s Last Frontier, writer Bongani Madondo brings to light the BLK JKS story. Interlaced with historic tellings of South Africa’s struggle, Madondo captures the rise of BLK JKS from their days as pre-teens to lives as rock musicians.

“In the limbo left by kwaito’s premature death, a band of four young bucks hardly out of puberty is fiddling with electric instruments. They have no inkling that they will one day stride indie rock’n'roll capitals as Africa’s belated answers to The Clash, The Smiths, The Cure or whoever. In no time, they will be proclaimed the “beautiful ones” that rock’n'roll has been waiting for since The Doors’ demise or since Tricky blessed the sinful earth with Maxinquaye. But I’m jumping the gun.”

Read more at Rolling Stone or pick up the July 2012 issue for the entire story.

LSTN: Gardens & Villa Cover Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy”

Today, Paste Magazine premiered Gardens & Villa’s new cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy” and it is fantastic. “I hardly remember my dreams these days. Sometimes, if I am lucky and I wake up very late, I find a thin film of another time or another life. I try desperately to capture this residue of a dream before it quickly fades. But the kind of dream I am referring to in this song is more like a sense of longing, a vision of a place where things are quiet, like floating in the ocean off of Hawaii.” -Victoria Bergsman of Taken By Trees

WATCH: Exitmusic Perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk

Playing songs from their recently released album, Passage, Exitmusic demonstrates that regardless the setting, their live show is a powerful and moving force. Watch above!

The songs of Exitmusic are so romantically rich, they could envelop a cavernous hall. Luckily, the band didn’t defang that cinematic power and anguish in the intimate confines of the NPR Music offices. Here, Exitmusic plays a beautifully buzzing set, marked by vocal nuance and stirring melodies.” -Michael Katzif at NPR

Want to help Tig with her new short-film? Head over to her Kickstarter! She’s raising funds to assist in the making of Clown Service, where “a heartbroken woman (Tig Notaro), desperate for a brighter mood, enlists the services of a traveling party clown.” Incentives include everything from a signed sticker from Tig’s podcast Professor Blastoff, to a private stand-up performance by Tig at your house (!!!!!!!!).

Premiering on Pitchfork yesterday, Exitmusic’s new video for “The Night,” off their recently released Passage, is now available for your viewing pleasure. The video follows a lost-looking Aleksa through an eerie, suburban house. Director Will Joines tells us, “For me, when Aleksa mentioned that song was about finding a loop hole to cheat the the separation of physical form, I immediately got excited about showing someone consumed and transformed by something greater than them self. Setting the video in a very ordinary environment seemed the perfect way to underscore this bizarre conversion.” Watch above!

“It’s (Passage) audacious and ambitious, twisting lyrics about depravity and loneliness into shared anthems meant for overcoming both.” – Pitchfork

Grab your copy from SC Distribution or find your nearest record store. EM is busy wrapping up their tour – see final dates HERE. Don’t miss them at this year’s Hopscotch Fest!

Love for Passage

“Their debut album proper quivers and quakes with the cinematic electronics and emotional abandonment of a soundtrack to Armageddon. But for all its bleak, dark fissures, bright and tender lights serenely burst out with hope.” – NME

“Passage surges, subsides and enthralls like a gothic Sigur Ros. Church’s guitar gives good Sturm und Drang but it’s Palladino’s vocal that’s centre-stage; occassionally a brooding murmur but more often a husky force of nature that could give the vengeful sirens of Greek mythology a run for their money.” 4 Stars – Mojo

“It broods and rumbles, full of anger and anguish and loneliness, before erupting in a squall of tortured release. It’s mostly bleak and intensely emotional, but also beautiful…But even (or perhaps especially) in its bleakest moments, Passage is one the most memorable and absorbing records you’ll hear in 2012.” – NPR

The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel recently curated the latest Shaking Through episode. Featuring Philadelphia-based band, Purling Hiss, the video captures all three members performing “Lolita” live, a definite change from the 4-track recording founding member Mike Polizze normally utilizes.

“Of everyone Adam knew, Purling Hiss was the one he believed would rise to the opportunity and create something remarkable, and so he and the band converged at Miner Street in Philadelphia to record “Lolita” over the course of a warm weekend in early April.”

Love for A Different Ship

“With A Different Ship, Here We Go Magic has clearly and undeniably arrived at the port of entry to indie rock’s pantheon of top shelf acts – an utterly shattering release that anyone who likes forward-thinking music must have.” - PopMatters

“Here We Go Magic loves the way a pattern promises the stability and control that Mr. Temple’s lyrics are never sure of…The album discreetly shows off the band’s meticulous virtuosity; its patterns are played, not programmed.”The New York Times

“Played live these songs will metastasise into expansive jams, and will sound great when they do, but here and now they’re sharp, disciplined, and seriously compelling.”BBC

A champion for the group since, Hilton writes,“Simple, spare beats hold chaotic soundscapes together while delicate melodies tell troubled tales. The songs are gorgeous and gruesome, soaring and sad, glittering dreams and haunting nightmares…But even (or perhaps especially) in its bleakest moments, Passage is one the most memorable and absorbing records you’ll hear in 2012.

STREAM PASSAGE NOW.

The album is available for pre-order; find your copy HERE. You can also purchase “The Night,” off the forthcoming album, at iTunes.

Nite Jewel Plays Bowery Ballroom, New York Time Reviews

*Photo by Willie Davis for The New York Times

For the past month, Nite Jewel has been hard at work touring in support of Chairlift. Tuesday night she took a step aside to headline her first show at the Bowery Ballroom. Sophia Knapp and Mac DeMarco opened the night, while Nite Jewel took her guests through slam dunk renditions of songs both old and new. Ben Ratliff of The New York Times was there to catch it all, saying, “It was an intense, joyous little set, full of precision, engagement and life force.” Read the full review HERE.

Nite Jewel’s next show takes place at Los Angeles’ Ford Amphitheatre for the Krautrock Classics: An Evening of Cosmic German Music. More information on artists and tickets HERE. Ramona will take her show abroad this summer; European dates to come soon!

WATCH: The War On Drugs Play the Late Show with David Letterman

“There’s a lot of music going on here, folks,” said David Letterman last night after The War On Drugs performance. Indeed, TWOD took the Late Show stage and did what they do best – put on one hell of a show. Guests for the evening included Rob Lowe and Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who gifted Adam backstage with that sweet bolo he wears during the show. How nice!

Playing “Come to the City” off of Slave Ambient, the group was joined by THE Paul Shaffer (note the high five exchange between Robbie and Paul after finishing) and an incredible horn section. It was the second late night tv performance for the guys, who performed on Fallon earlier this year. Watch above! (Don’t miss the Pacers exchange between Adam and David after David tries to buy Steven’s drums. FYI: Steven’s a huge Pacers fan! Wooo!)

“This past weekend’s EXITMUSIC show was perfect for that dark setting at The Earl. The band’s introspective and often chilling music thrived in that atmosphere.”
The Blue Indian

“Aleska Palladino’s vocals rung with a raw intensity and the booming drums shook the entire room…Rather than trap me, however, the sound envelops my soul and I couldn’t help but find my entire body moving along.” Muzik Dizcovery

Emusic’s Porcelain Raft Video Experience

“Strange Weekend is the snapshot of time. You don’t know what’s going on or you know something’s going on.” – Mauro Remiddi

A few weeks ago emusic invited unsuspecting New Yorkers to join in on a Porcelain Raft video shoot. By utilizing some technological trickery, they set up a speaker so music would play while people stood in a certain spot. What happened next was pure reaction and it’s all caught on film, with Mauro’s “Picture” as the guiding force. Sure it’s strange and maybe even a little weird, but at it’s best the experiment shows people behaving in their natural form. It’s difficult not to smile as you see how the unexpected can lead to true joy. Watch above.

Porcelain Raft Announces 7″, Releases Video for “Drifting In and Out”

Premiering Porcelain Raft’s video for “Drifting In and Out” earlier this morning, NPR says, “It’s pretty amazing what a person can do with smoke, a few lights and some good editing…Remiddi creates what I imagine it’s like inside the head of a person just about to start dreaming. The video is surreal, but never dives into nightmare territory.” Mauro Remiddi brings us the new video just in time for the announcement of his new Drifting In and Out b/w Chain 7″, out June 26th. Exitmusic made their inaugural stop at Austin’s SXSW last week. Playing EIGHT shows, they were sure to grab attention of festival-goers while they were there. Bob Boilen, a name we all recognize from NPR’S All Song’s Considered, stopped by the DOC/JAG/SC showcase at Mohawk on Thursday night and EM, although playing in the dark, made their mark. Last week, Nite Jewel stormed Austin’s SXSW with a style and sass all her own. Following the recent release of her sophomore album One Second of Love, it was the kick-off to an epic tour, now in full swing. See her live with Chairlift; check out all the dates HERE.

Playing a handful of showcases and parties, Ramona demanded some serious attention in her energy-packed, live performances. “Watching her dance around, flip her hair everywhere while playing her synth and singing these songs somehow makes the experience all the more human,” writes Now Toronto. Dummy Magazine caught Ramona at the Ad Hoc & True Panther party, saying “Nite Jewel’s got the funk.” We agree. Watch their video of her performing “Memory, Man” above.

For all you foodies out there, Food Republic recently got the low-down on everything food-related in the Nite Jewel camp, including Ramona’s idea to open a restaraunt called Slow Jamz. Eat it up.

Nite Jewel on the Making of One Second of Love, Out Now!

Yours Truly sat down with Ramona Gonzalez, the powerhouse behind Nite Jewel, to talk about her new album, One Second of Love, released earlier this week! It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the the album’s composition, from the chord structures and lyrical birth to the awesome mic engineer. Ramona digs into “She’s Always Watching You,” sharing detail on the relationships and interactions that drove the song and the album as a whole. Watch it HERE or click on the photo above. She also recently gave an incredibly insightful interview to Vulture. You’ll definitely want to it read it. As always, Ramona tells it like it is.

With the new album out, Ramona’s in full motion. She’ll hit the road this next week, heading down to Austin’s SXSW for performances at the Secretly Canadian Showcase, Fader Fort, Urban Outfitters Party and more. After SXSW, you can see her live with Chairlift. Full tour schedule HERE.

Nite Jewel’s ‘One Second of Love’ Out TODAY!

You’ve waited patiently and now the time has come. Nite Jewel releases her sophomore album and debut release for Secretly Canadian today! On One Second of Love you’ll find a re-imagination of Golden-era R&B pop; future-classic sounds alongside vocal sultriness. If Nite Jewel’s earlier work brought to mind the likes of Lisa Lisa or Debbie Deb on quaaludes, this new body of work may conjure up clearer images of the likes of Sade, Eurythmics-era Annie Lennox and Tracy Thorn. Pure, confident, singular but intricate and delightfully sophisticated. You can order your copy HERE or pick one up from Nite Jewel at any of her upcoming shows! Check out the full list of dates HERE.

Watch the new video for the title track!

One Second of Love

“Ramona Gonzalez, the singer and songwriter of the Los Angeles group Nite Jewel, has a pretty and welcoming mezzo-soprano voice that sometimes drops into contralto range. Right around its lower middle – the octave above middle C basically – is her sweet spot. It’s there that her dark and mellow tones come out, as well as her generosity, her care, her ambition and possibly her sense of romance. It’s the key to her.”- New York Times

Nite Jewel succeeds in crafting an album that is both lyrically and aurally rich. -Consequence of Sound

“She’s fascinated by certain sounds for both nostalgic and cerebral reasons, and throughout her new album, One Second of Love, those two forces duke it out.” -LA Times

Porcelain Raft in a Brilliant Take Away Show

Porcelain Raft | A Take Away Show | Is it too deep for you / Backwords from La Blogotheque on Vimeo.

La Blogotheque brings us a brilliant new Take Away Show, featuring Porcelain Raft in rare form. “Mauro Remiddi strips away the protective, Rococo layers of his newly-minted ‘Strange Weekend’ and shows the strength of his foundations.” Indeed, there is strength as well as a poignant beauty, as Mauro offers his voice, piano, distant percussion and little else. In the first video, he performs “Is It Too Deep for You” and “Backwords” and then moves to a local coffee shop to finish the session with “Drifting In and Out.” Both videos are available for viewing above.

WATCH: Nite Jewel’s New Video for “One Second of Love”

One Second of Love by Nite Jewel from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.

If you follow us on Twitter, you may have seen our Mysteries from Nite Jewel Video Set photo series. Did the octovomit photos leave you puzzled? Probably. It all comes to fruit today with Nite Jewel’s release of her video for “One Second of Love,” the title-track of her forthcoming album. Directed by Delaney Bishop, who has previously worked with Snoop Dog and Marilyn Mason, the video features a typical party with atypical guests. It presents a conflation of notions of transgression, excess, asceticism, and conformity. Flanked by two identically dressed dancers, Ramona works her way through the video in an oddly intriguing form. Should we even mention the Narnia-like creature who makes a strange appearance? Watch for yourself above.

In other awesome Nite Jewel news, you can hear Ramona on DNTEL’s new album. Titled Aimlessness, it’s DNTEL’s first release in five years and it’s out in May. Read more at Tiny Mix Tapes.

One Second of Love is available for streaming now at Gorilla vs. Bear. You can pre-order Nite Jewel’s debut album for Secretly Canadian now. It’s out next Tuesday, March 6th!

The War on Drugs Play London in One of Their Biggest Performances To Date

The War On Drugs took control of London’s Electric Ballroom Tuesday night. With a 13-song set plus a romping encore of “It’s Your Destiny” and “Needle in Your Eye #16,” they played to 1000 fine folks in one of their biggest performances to date. Uncut‘s Allan Jones was there to cover and he gives us a intricate play-by-play, saying,”More, and soon, is the response of everyone I speak to on the way out, those of them who aren’t still speechless, anyway.” You can and should read the full show review HERE.

Included in the set was a cover of “A Pagan Palace,” originally done by UK band, The Waterboys. Jones calls to The War On Drugs’ many influences, then writes, “Less commented on perhaps is what they share with The Waterboys. It’s a connection made explicit tonight via a terrific version of ‘A Pagan Place’, with Granduciel’s impassioned vocal whoops appropriately reminiscent of Mike Scott, as they are on reflection elsewhere, punctuating a wild thrashing of acoustic guitars. There are actually only two of them being played, but the giant thrum they make sounds like the entire Red Army is up on stage strumming away with giddy abandon.” Watch The War On Drugs’ “A Pagan Palace” above.

The War On Drugs trek on, playing Bristol tonight and eventually coming back home to continue their tour Stateside. They’ll make a stop at the Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian/Dead Oceans SXSW 2012 Official Showcase, playing alongside label-mates Gardens & Villa, Nite Jewel, Exitmusic and many more. Check out the full showcase lineup HERE and then pop over to see the rest of the WoD’s full tour HERE.

Stream Nite Jewel’s New Album Now, Out Officially March 6th

Gorilla vs. Bear premiered Nite Jewel’s new album, One Second of Love, earlier this morning. If you haven’t given it a proper listen yet, do so above. Straying from the lo-fi nature of her previous releases, Ramona steps up the production and people have been quick to notice. It’s easily danced to with funk undertones that see you through to the end. Stereogum says, “Lose yourself in the flickering prettiness.” We agree; don’t be afraid to get up and move to this one.

Out on March 6th, One Second of Love is available for pre-order HERE. We still have a few bundles left featuring the dreamy “lovers frost” colored vinyl. Don’t wait to get your copy-available exclusively through pre-order!

Exitmusic Announces New Album, Title Track Available For Download

We’ve got some incredibly exciting news. Exitmusic has a brand new full-length and it’s out May 22nd. Titled Passage, it’s the much anticipated followup to their debut EP, From Silence. Earlier this morning, KEXP premiered the title track, saying “what defines Exitmusic is their epic songwriting style that is 100% evident in their new single ‘Passage.’”

Recorded at Rare Book Room in Brooklyn with mixer Nicholas Vernhes (Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter), Church and Palladino, along with the assistance of new bandmates drummer Dru Prentiss and engineer Nicholas X, built on the chilling, beautiful aesthetic they had created as a duo when recording at home. The result is a sound that is more powerful and more nuanced, covering broad oceans of emotional terrain.

Opener and title track “Passage” is like watching a great shifting of tides through rapid time-lapse photography, introducing new dynamics in one magnificent breath. It is a statement of intent that tears down the Victorian boudoir gauze found on previous efforts. The ghosts are still piercing the veil, but now they’re throwing chairs. The song begins gently, with candlelight piano plucks, distant explosions on the horizon, aching breaths and moans. But in moments, the oceans swell and lurch as it detonates into a shower of brilliant shrapnel.

Passage is a long time in the making, and certainly worth the wait. Listen and download the title track below.

Exitmusic kicks off their tour Tuesday, February 28th at Mercury Lounge in New York. See full list of dates HERE.

Damien Jurado’s ‘Maraqopa’ Out Today!

It’s the day we’ve all been eagerly awaiting! Damien Jurado’s album Maraqopa is officially out! You can purchase it in-store, ONLINE or from Damien himself at one of his many upcoming shows. The feedback surrounding the album has been tremendous. See what people are saying below. Then pick up your copy of Maraqopa and get out to a show to decide for yourself! List of tour dates HERE.

LOVE FOR MARAQOPA

“But Maraqopa signifies a shift from an album-length exercise in osmosis to a set of songs made to excite, and Jurado seems to know this….the man once dubbed “the Raymond Carver of folk” for his spare tales of other people’s anguish is stepping into the spotlight-baiting critics, even!-while fingers snap and women swoon.”
-A.V. Club

“Damien Jurado’s latest is a fantastic maze.” -Tiny Mix Tapes

“Even after 12 full-length albums, Jurado is still finding ways to grow musically. While continuing to deliver the intimate songs of hopeless love and regret for his longtime fans, he stills finds ways to surprise as he works with his magician-like collaborator. Maraqopa lingers long after the last track informs us that, ‘We are all mountains still asleep.’”-American Songwriter

“Jurado’s songwriting is comfortable without being lazy; tunes consist of deep lyrics with a few strums and a catchy melody, sometimes with an unexpected chord change forcing the song into a peculiar/pretty zone. And his tenor voice remains a world unto itself, distant and glowing.”-Seattle Times

Nite Jewel Announces Record Release, DaM-FunK Set to DJ

Nite Jewel’s One Second of Love is out on March 6th and what better way to celebrate than a record release party presented by Yours Truly that very day? It’s true; you can see her live at the Del Monte Speakeasy in Venice, California. To add to the excitement is an opening dj set by DāM-FunK. Ramona joins Chairlift at the end of March to tour the States. See the full schedule HERE.

Four Seattle Artists Take on Damien Jurado, The Seattle Times Covers

In the week leading up to Damien Jurado’s record release show, The Seattle Times shares quite a special series comprised of certain artists covering songs from the expansive Jurado catalog. All artists are tied to Seattle in some way, which only makes sense as they take on songs from the city’s own “folk boom godfather,” whose influence has proven to reach far and wide.

First we have The Head and The Heart’s Jon Russell covering “Beacon Hill,” followed by local soul band, Pickwick, doing “I am the Greatest of All Liars.” Next, Al James from Dolerean does a mighty fine job in his recreation of “Cloudy Shoes” and last, but certainly not least, Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk finishes up with “Last Rights.” Each track is available for streaming at the artists links above.

Damien kicks off his tour with a record release show at The Neptune this Friday, February 17th. Full list of tour dates HERE. The new record, Maraqopa, comes out February 21st. Pick it up at one of Damien’s shows or you can still pre-order it now and receive at least one free (exclusive) 7-inch.

Porcelain Raft Unveils New Video for “Something In Between”

Porcelain Raft unveils the new video for “Something In Between,” the B-side to the “Unless You Speak From Your Heart” 7-inch, out next Tuesday, February 21st. With its “surprising swagger,” Pitchfork just named “Unless You Speak From Your Heart” Best New Track. You can pre-order HERE.

The video follows suit with a series Mauro Remiddi is creating for his recently released album, Strange Weekend. He says, “A few months ago I filmed the billboard you see at the beginning of the video. I forgot about those images I took until a week ago, while driving back after filming the video for ‘Unless You Speak From You Heart’, we saw the same exact billboard collapsed on the BQE, very close to where I live. That structure consisted of two different billboards that don’t face each other but are connected somehow. ‘Something In Between’ feels like the right title for that.”

Porcelain Raft is on tour NOW in Europe with M83. He’ll be back in the States later this spring with Youth Lagoon. See all dates HERE.

Oupa and Tony Crow Cover Porcelain Raft’s “Backwords”

Porcelain Raft’s Strange Weekend came out a few weeks ago and the feedback has been tremendous. People are diggin’ Mauro Remiddi’s debut album and we couldn’t be happier for the guy. Today, we’ve got a brand new Porcelain Raft cover from Oupa (Daniel Blumberg from Yuck) and Tony Crow (Lambchop pianist). What we hear is “Backwords,” but in a much different way. Recorded live down in Nashville at Beech House Studios, Oupa and Tony Crow strip down the track and take the singer-songwriter approach. Laced with acoustic guitar and soft-sounding keys, the cover is an earnest working of the original and its really good. “Backwords” is set to be released March 12th on a limited amount of white vinyl. You can pre-order the single or download the MP3 HERE.

It’s a Double Whammy! Nite Jewel Previews Another Track from New Album and Stevie Wonder Cover

Earlier this morning, Spin debuted Nite Jewel’s second single, “In The Dark,” from her forthcoming album, One Second to Love. The song begins with a statement of puzzling contradiction from a female singer, a statement which represents a battle cry for those who have fallen victim to love’s disorienting effects. Over simple guitar strings, drifting synthesizers, and an echoing drum loop, Ramona Gonzalez describes human attachment as a paradoxical force that is as alienating as it is intoxicating. Taking cues from Sade and Prefab Sprout, “In The Dark” shows just how much impact can be culled from a set of simple yet effective elements.

Ramona also recently recorded Stevie Wonder’s “Visions” in tribute of Yours Truly founder’s late sister. Echoing the work of Alice Coltrane’s “Turiya Sings,” “Visions (Nite Jewels Seance)” is bare-bones; Ramona reworks the song with effortless grace for a somber, beautiful rendition. Listen below.

You can see Nite Jewel live this spring. Ramona kicks off the tour at Austin’s SXSW and then teams up with Chairlift for the majority of dates-full list below.

Watch: New Video for The War on Drugs’ “Brothers”

The War on Drugs – Brothers from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.

The War On Drugs are excited to share the brand new video for “Brothers,” one of the many highlights off their stellar Slave Ambient. Following the more kaleidoscopic videos for “Baby Missiles” and “Come to the City,” the “Brothers” video, which premiered this morning via New York Magazine’s Vulture, definitely takes a different approach with its bleak western narrative. More on the “Brothers” video from the director team of Brewer, a pair of brothers (Ben and Alex), actually, is below.

“We kept picturing it as the soundtrack to a dark western like Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid or Unforgiven. That is where the deranged T.V cowboy character came from. We wanted the video to feel like the most exciting five minutes taken out of a longer movie. The biggest challenge in the filming was how to make the old cowboy (played by David Weindel) seem threatening, and how to make the nurse (played by Tallie Medel) seem like she was dealing with the situation the way a normal person might really handle such a nightmare.”

In case you missed it, The War On Drugs played a pretty damn perfect performance of “Baby Missiles” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon a couple of weeks ago for their late night TV debut, complete with two drummers, including special guest, ?uestlove, and dueling keyboards. After five solid months of touring, and several more on the horizon (full schedule HERE.

Murnau’s silent film, “Faust.” G & V will perform the music live on February 4th at Lobero Theatre. Antony Talks with V Magazine about Performance at Radio City

As January 26 draws closer, Antony gears up for the debut of Swanlights at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Months of preparation have led up to a single night, a single performance. The visual concert webs in and out of Antony’s dream world to portray the inner thoughts only someone as gifted and forward-moving as Antony could create in a tangible space. A MoMA commissioned event, Antony enlisted the help of several outstanding composers and lighting and set artists to make the show grow from a concert to an experience.

In Black and Gold: Antony, V Magazine dives into detail about the upcoming show and what exactly it means to Antony to perform such a production in the grandeur setting that is Radio City. “The scale of the production is less of a concern for the seasoned artist, who grew up performing in small East Village venues, than it is something to marvel at. ‘It’s funny because a lot of the songs are the same ones I performed at the Pyramid Club when I was 20 years old,’ he says. ‘To perform them with a symphony orchestra, in New York which is my home, is really rewarding.” Never forgetting his roots or the number of artists still struggling to survive, Antony comments on the fortune he as been granted as “a reflection of a great circle of cultural artists and performers, transgender people, and punk women.”

To read the full article, visit V MAGAZINE and to witness Swanlights in person, purchase your tickets HERE. It’s an event not to be missed.
