Damien Jurado returned to Chicago’s WBEZ a few days ago for an in-studio performance before playing a SOLD OUT show at Schuba’s later that night! You might have heard Damien on the show back in 2010, playing in support of Saint Bartlett. He chats it up with host Andrew Gill and plays a few songs as well. Damien is currently on tour. He’ll play Somerville tonight and ANOTHER SOLD OUT show at the Mercury Lounge on Saturday! When previewing the show, The New York Times writes, “A snarling hard-core punk turned diligently bleeding heart, Mr. Jurado is a folk singer-songwriter with rare delicacy and resilience. Antony and the Johnsons: CUT THE WORLD is a collection of live symphonic performances of songs from the band’s 4 full length albums (SWANLIGHTS, THE CRYING LIGHT, I AM A BIRD NOW, S/T). Recorded in Copenhagen, DK with The Danish National Chamber Orchestra, Cut the World features arrangements by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, Maxim Moston and Antony.The album is set for release in the U.S. on August 7 and the UK on August 6.

Additionally the title track “Cut The World” is featured here for the first time. It is one of Antony’s new songs for The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic; directed by Robert Wilson and staring Antony, Marina Abramovic and Willem Dafoe.

Cut the World was recorded live on September 2nd and 3rd, 2011 at the DK Concert Hall in Copenhagen, DK and represents Antony’s continued meditation on light, nature & femininity. Antony discusses his ideas on the track “Future Feminism”, a speech he made during one of the concerts. Addressing the affects of patriarchy on the global ecology, Antony explores the possibility of shifting towards feminine systems of governance in a gesture to restore our world. The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel recently curated the latest Shaking Through episode. Featuring Philadelphia-based band, Purling Hiss, the video captures all three members performing “Lolita” live, a definite change from the 4-track recording founding member Mike Polizze normally utilizes.

“Of everyone Adam knew, Purling Hiss was the one he believed would rise to the opportunity and create something remarkable, and so he and the band converged at Miner Street in Philadelphia to record “Lolita” over the course of a warm weekend in early April.”

Purling Hiss opened for The War On Drugs last fall; perhaps you saw them together. If not, get a small taste of how awesome this band it by watching the videos above.

While driving along Route 70 in Ohio today, Here We Go Magic passed a hitchhiker who just happened to be THE John Waters. Hitchhiking is not a rare event for Waters, who in a recent interview said, “I do still hitchhike – it’s a great way to meet people, and to have sex. I’ve hitchhiked in Baltimore, Provincetown, San Francisco – what, people don’t hitchhike in Australia?” The band is currently making their way towards Bloomington, Indiana for a show at The Bishop tonight. Perhaps Waters will join? Guess you’ll have to be there to find out!
