LISTEN // Here We Go Magic Streams ‘Be Small’ Via Noisey

SC315

Here We Go Magics Be Small, out October 16th on Secretly Canadian, is streaming now via Noisey accompanied by an in-depth interview with the band. The new album finds HWGM taking a smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes but hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and singular sonic ambition. Over six years and, now, four albums, HWGM has always found its own, idiosyncratic path through fidgety prog-rock, bliss-pop and sound collage experimentations with a heavy focus on groove. You can hear how these songs likely began as Luke Temples bedroom folk riffs, but where they ultimately end up here with the help of longtime HWGM collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Michael Bloch, as well as Austin Vaughn on drums is near-transcendent and celestial.

HWGM has become a real poets poet among NYC musicians and bands. And its clear why. You can watch their hands and movements all you want. You can try and count out the time signatures. But youre almost always left dumbfounded as to how their songs with those seemingly simple jagged, syncopated licks and floating melodies developed from Point A to Point B, where all is a swirl of sound and emotion and groove, jaw-on-the-floor stuff. In these times, where easy answers are a click away, we need this sort of thing more than we know, to be made, again, into babies amazed at the wondrous mobile spinning above us.

Jens Lekman To Write And Record Songs For ‘Ghostwriting’ At Cincinatti’s Contemporary Arts Center

lekmanjens_large

From November 16th through 19th, Jens Lekman will be having conversations with storytellers, then writing and recording songs based on their stories at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center. Here’s the press release from the arts center:

Jens Lekman, born and reared in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a songwriter, adventurer and retired bingo hall employee. Across thirteen EPs and four albums of critical acclaim, Jens has repurposed the worlds great, lost pop hooks of past and present into songs of his own-making, breathing into them his droll sense of humor, romance and melody to give them newfound buoyancy.

With Ghostwriting, Jens seeks to turn your personal stories into song. Following a public call for story submissions, a diverse collection will be chosen with selected storytellers sitting down with Jens to share their tales of love, fear, and secrets. From there, Jens and his band will assemble the details of each conversation and quickly construct a pop song related to the shared moment. Once written, the songs will be immediately recorded and released online to the masses, each one serving as a celebration of the moments that shape us, and the world.

Ghostwriting comes as an extension of Jens commitment to write and record a new song for each week of 2015. These post cards are shared thoughts and experiences that invite the public into his artistic process as he assembles a catalogue reflecting where each week of the year has found him, both creatively and personally. For Ghostwriting, Jens reverses this role, offering an interested ear and megaphone for the idiosyncratic stories of everyday life.

LISTEN // Here We Go Magic Share “Tokyo London US Korea,” Fall Tour Dates

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 9.50.10 AM

Here We Go Magic are happy to share the latest track, “Tokyo London US Korea,” taken from their upcoming album, Be Small, out October 16th on Secretly Canadian. “Tokyo London US Korea” is an off-kilter track with a meandering guitar line and potent syncopation, but as Luke Temple explains, the lyrics and the music exist in juxtaposition, “Its very linear and dark at the same time… we only like to think and talk about the things and places that everyone else is thinking and talking about the funny little story of man.” Accompany the track is a video directed by Dick Black who says, “It’s a video about walking fish. And everything is going to be ok.

Recorded and mixed by Here We Go Magic themselves, the “overtly major and optimistic” songs on Be Small are a big leap from the live, expansive sounds of 2012’s Nigel Godrich-produced A Different Ship. Inspired by the likes of Brian Eno and John Cale’s collaborative album, Wrong Way Up, and Robert Wyatt’s Schleep, this is an album of robust future pop that still continues its route through HWGM’s inimitable path of fidgety prog-rock, blissful melodies and sound collage experimentations but always with a focus on a deep groove.

LISTEN // Steven A. Clark Shares “Can’t Have” (Ape Drum Remix)

timthumb

Steven A. Clarks Secretly Canadian debut album, The Lonely Roller, is out now and starting to turn heads. Hes the recent subject of a Weekend Edition Sunday feature and his hot, new single, “Cant Have,” gets a remix from rising Houston producer Ape Drums which premieres today via self-titled.

Rather than demoting Clark’s emotive vocals to the background, Ape Drums manages to keep them prominent; effortlessly infusing them with snares, high hats and kick drums.

I loved working on this remix,” Ape Drums notes, “I had a lot of room for creativity as the original melody of the vocals were already amazing. I took my time, changed ideas completely and am very satisfied with the outcome.

Ape Drums brought a great new dynamic to ‘Can’t Have’ says Clark, aptly adding “Now we can dance and cry at the same time.” Its the aural representation of your inability to let go of summer.

Luckily, Steven A. Clark will hit the road this November with Sinkane to heat things up during the pre-winter doldrums. Prior to that hell hit New York City for CMJ where hell perform live on WNYC Soundcheck and at the Secretly Group CMJ Showcase.

WATCH // Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart Share “In Touch” Video, Fall Tour Dates

The enigmatic video for “In Touch” features imagery shot during a trip to play a show in Lebanon and then digitally altered for the video. Despite the Arabic influence in the music, the video shoot was not planned for the trip but came out organically from the footage that they shot off-the-cuff whilst they were there.

In a twist of good fortune, we all found ourselves in Beirut earlier this year. It seemed only natural for Charles-Andr to film his reflections, the bands, and the vibe of this rare set of circumstances” the band adds “with his discreet reel to reel projectors, we hardly noticed that a music video was in the works. Our memories of that time in Lebanon are a whirlwind of first impressions, late nights, good music, and good people. A barrage of colors and light, not unlike this video.

For people that witnessed the Suuns live show last year for their Images Du Futur album, theyll tell you that theres no such thing as a typical Suuns show; but now with Jerusalem In My Hearts Radwan Mounmeh collaborating, its set to be even more spectacular. With shows across the continent, including a headline performance at East London venue Oslo and at ATPs Nightmare Before Christmas, expect to be completely blown away.
