Gardens & Villa play “Orange Blossom” live on Yours Tru.ly

Gardens & Villa met up with the Yours Tru.ly crew in San Francisco earlier this spring to tape this acoustic version of their single “Orange Blossom.” Using a glockenspiel, a baby grand piano and a cajon (box drum) along with their signature bansuri flutes, the band transforms the song into a blissed-out twinkly jam. Be sure to catch them on tour now before they head to Europe later this month.

Gardens & Villa Flutes Rock, and We Have Proof

As you may know, Gardens & Villa have a few new remixes floating around, and we celebrated with a limited edition run of laser-engraved Gardens & Villa flutes.

We sent some to stores, and sent a few more to radio stations that have been jamming out the band’s self-titled debut. It was our way of saying thanks, and the response was stupendous, with radio folks letting us know how much they enjoyed getting something a little different in the massive fall mail piles.

But nothing, nothing, nothing could’ve prepared us for this:

The inimitable Thor Slaughter (from KWVA, at the University of Oregon in Eugene) posted up a youtube video of himself and his flute, jamming as only he can. He was inspired by the indelible fluted funk of Gardens & Villa themselves.

Thank you Gardens & Villa, and thank you Thor. We give you five flutes, too. Out of five.

Read on for the full run of Gardens & Villa fall tour dates. And if you’re really lucky, your local record store still might have some flutes to give out with the album.

GAYNGS remix Gardens & Villa’s “Orange Blossom”

In the spirit of putting the lime in the coconut & mixing it all up, Jagjaguwar band GAYNGS has remixed Secretly Canadian artist Gardens & Villa. Ryan Olson from GAYNGS took a liking to the song “Orange Blossom” off Gardens & Villa’s self-titled album. The two crews met while Olson was working in Austin just as G&V were passing through on tour. They vibed the great vibe together at Jim Eno’s (Spoon) studio & came back with a funkified new track. You can check out the premiere at Altered Zones or listen here. And don’t forget to go see Gardens & Villa when they head out on tour next week with Youth Lagoon.

Gardens & Villa play select dates in North America this month before meeting up with rising talent Youth Lagoon, for a string of dates in September and October including a performance at Pygmalion Festival in Urbana, IL. Youth Lagoon’s Trevor Powers caught Gardens & Villa at a show in his hometown of Boise, ID earlier this year and the two bands found a fast friendship between them. Now they reunite to bring two of this year’s most exciting new bands to a city near you. See the full tour dates after the jump.

Gardens & Villa’s Debut LP Streaming Now at Yours Truly

According to all things Twitter, Tumblr and beyonder, Santa Barbara’s Gardens & Villa has tickled the fancy of the masses — unexpectedly, in many cases — whilst on the band’s North American tour with Foster the People. We too found ourselves under the band’s heavy spell at a recent Chicago appearance. You can say it’s coastal, new wave pop, and that would be absolutely true. I mean, we’ve said that very phrase ourselves. But it’s simultaneously ceremonial and huge-feeling. It’s joyous, but it’s weighty when you least suspect. They also have a stencil of Michael Jackson on their bass amp, and they end the whole live set with a ripping, near-Krautrock version of Gary Numan’s “Cars.”

G&V’s self-titled Secretly Canadian debut is out July 5 (Pre-order HERE or HERE). But today through release day, Yours Truly is hosting a full-stream of the record. From the opening synth pulses of “Black Hills” through the closing tribal flute ceremony of “Neon Dove,” the record is front-to-back excellence. It catwalks the exciting line between stark-pop songcraft and rain forest lushness.
