LISTEN // Jens Lekman Shares ‘WWJD’ Mixtape Featuring Three Unreleased Songs

SC artist Jens Lekman is back with a special mixtape of his favorite tunes plus three never before heard tracks “WWJD”, “I Remember”, and “What’s That Perfume That You Wear?”. Jens offers the story behind the mix tape in his own words below.

While travelling through midwest America some time ago I stopped at a gasstation and bought a WWJD bracelet for $1.99 and insisted that it stood for “What Would Jens Do?”. I would look at it when I felt indecisive, think about what Jens really would do and then do the opposite of that. I thought that would be a good way to find some new paths in life, and to get away from the paths I kept taking that didn’t lead me anywhere good.

“WWJD” is a song about regrets, learning from your mistakes, and bettering yourself. I wrote it last year, recorded it quickly and felt it didn’t fit in with most of the other songs I was writing. Together with “What’s That Perfume That You Wear?” and “I Remember” they weren’t adhering to the rules I had set up for my next album but they were also too good to forget. So I weaved them in exclusively on this mixtape where they are stations on a longer journey, where loops and smaller fragments, ideas for songs and favourite songs by others swoosh by outside the window. Feel free to open that window and feel the breeze in your hair.

Yours truly,
Jens Lekman

BLK JKS collab on Domus mixtape, available at FADER

BLK JKS

FADER has just posted a stream of the new Domus mixtape, curated by BLK JKS and visual artist Athi-Patra Ruga to give the listener an authentic taste of Johannesburg. The stream is part of a series by Daniel Perlin, who goes by DJ N-RON. The band, who officially participated as BLKJKSSNDSYSTM, offered this statement:

“There is a lot of talk about what Johannesburg is, what it was and what it is becoming. It is a city in, perhaps eternal, transition. This is a privilege for us, the people who call it ours. We can make Johannesburg whatever we want it to be. The city is here, asking us to shape it. While some look to European cities and envy their long established routines, venues and structures in the arts, there are those of us who see the blank canvas and embrace it. We see what we want our city to be, we see it’s place in the world, and we see the importance of our contributions. We have a dream and we want to make it reality.”

You can read about the whole thing on FADER here or stream it on the Domus site here.

BLK JKS also recently played the enormous Rock al Parque festival in Bogota, Colombia over July 4th weekend. Rock al Parque, widely considered one of the most important rock festivals in Latin America, attracted over 336,000 attendees this year. BLK JKS were joined on the bill by punk legends Dead Kennedys and DRI as well as a myriad of international acts like Buraka Som Sistema (Portugal), Delorean (Spain) and Colombia natives Bomba Estereo.
