NIKKI SUDDEN “Death Is Hanging Over Me” Intimate Live Video Made Available

Punkcast has made available four videos of the second to last live performance by the late NIKKI SUDDEN, performing his classic song “Death Is Hanging Over Me”, as well as Green Shield Stamps, Read About Seymour and Falling. The songs were performed at an impromptu in-store performance a New York City’s The Cakeshop (named after the SWELL MAPS song) less than 40 hours before his tragic passing. It’s a harrowing performance and well worth checking out. Thanks to Punkcast for making it available.

NIKKI SUDDEN, May You Rest In Peace

We’re incredibly sad to report that our friend NIKKI SUDDEN passed away Sunday, March 26, age 49, in New York City after performing the prior night at the Knitting Factory. He wrote hundreds of songs and made over 20 albums as a solo artist and with his bands SWELL MAPS, THE JACOBITES, THE LAST BANDITS and his band with ROWLAND S. HOWARD, among others. He was an inspiration to watch at work, working ceaselessly as a musician, writer and actor. Just prior to heading out for this last US tour, he completed his latest album “The Truth Doesn’t Matter” and was putting the finishing touches on his autobiography.

It was a great honor to work with such a legendary figure, and his warmth and generosity of spirit will not be forgotten. He was a good man in endless pursuit of his artistic dreams. We extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family, and rest easily knowing that he has joined his brother Epic Soundtracks, who passed away in 1997. We’re seeking solace in Nikki’s timeless records and we feel blessed to have known Nikki and to have his voice sing on.

NIKKI SUDDEN Coming To America, Recording New Album, Writing Autobiography

Taking a break from recording his latest solo album The Truth Doesn’t Matter, NIKKI SUDDEN will be playing a few weeks worth of solo dates in the US later this month and in March. He’ll be showcasing new songs from his upcoming full-length, as well as from his massive 30-year body of work. Stay tuned to our tourdates page for his updated schedule. As if that wouldn’t keep a man busy, he’s also “99% finished” with his autobiography entitled The Last Bandit. As a founding member of Swell Maps, the Jacobites and having penned over a dozen classic albums, we know that Mr. Sudden’s bio is going to be a rich read. Finally, Nikki’s foray into films has begun: 8 of his songs were featured in Mika Kaurismaki’s film Honey Baby, he acted in the film The Pacific and Eddy (see him in the trailer with Dominique Swain and Ryan Donowho), and he’s written a song for the film The Favor by Mexican filmmaker Eva Aridjis.
