LISTEN // Here We Go Magic Streams ‘Be Small’ Via Noisey

Here We Go Magics Be Small, out October 16th on Secretly Canadian, is streaming now via Noisey accompanied by an in-depth interview with the band. The new album finds HWGM taking a smaller approach to production and finding more intimate soundscapes but hosts no less acrobatics of musicianship and singular sonic ambition. Over six years and, now, four albums, HWGM has always found its own, idiosyncratic path through fidgety prog-rock, bliss-pop and sound collage experimentations with a heavy focus on groove. You can hear how these songs likely began as Luke Temples bedroom folk riffs, but where they ultimately end up here with the help of longtime HWGM collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Michael Bloch, as well as Austin Vaughn on drums is near-transcendent and celestial.

HWGM has become a real poets poet among NYC musicians and bands. And its clear why. You can watch their hands and movements all you want. You can try and count out the time signatures. But youre almost always left dumbfounded as to how their songs with those seemingly simple jagged, syncopated licks and floating melodies developed from Point A to Point B, where all is a swirl of sound and emotion and groove, jaw-on-the-floor stuff. In these times, where easy answers are a click away, we need this sort of thing more than we know, to be made, again, into babies amazed at the wondrous mobile spinning above us.

WATCH // Suuns And Jerusalem In My Heart Share “Gazelles In Flight” Video Via Noisey, New Collaborative Album Out April 14th

Beginning in November 2012, Suuns [Ben Shemie, Liam O’Neill, Max Henry and Joseph Yarmush] and long time friend, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, aka Jerusalem In My Heart, rented a studio in Montreal for seven days to record. The session turned into the amazing collection of tracks on the upcoming album Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart, out April 14th via Secret City in Canada and Secretly Canadian worldwide. Today, we’re sharing the video for the first single off the record, “Gazelles In Flight”, premiering this morning via Noisey and available to watch above or here on YouTube.

You can pre-order the album via SCD, Amazon, iTunes, or your local record store.

Directed by Charles-Andre Coderre, the film is made from 16mm color film archives found in a Montreal garbage container. The original footage has been modified by various handmade film techniques. On the unique video, Suuns says:

“This is our second video shot on film, while Jerusalem in my Heart works exclusively with reel-to-reel analogue film projectors. Visual artist, Charles-Andre Coderre – and visual counterpart to JIMH – manipulated the film and put this video together for this first single. It made sense to keep the video in-house, just like the music, and maintain a link to our respective projects.”

Early Love for IMAGES DU FUTUR

“The gentle psychedelia of Suuns is perfectly suited to the placid, unsettling visions that vocalist Ben Shemie is singing about here.”PITCHFORK

“SUUNS is clearly still making music that grabs your insides first and then engages your brain after, just on this one effort, they are doing it in a gentler, more restrained way – like the stroke of a lion’s paw before it unfurls its claws and tears your heart out.” –NOISEY

“…if “Edie’s Dream” is any indication, the foursome will be heading a little deeper down the rabbit hole on their upcoming album, Images Du Futur…Creepy and meditative vocals, delayed guitar, and a spine-tingling sense that some lunatic is patiently waiting around that shadowy corner to stab you in the neck. Fun stuff…” –CHICAGO READER
