Today, we are proud to release TURNING, the concert film documentary of the critically acclaimed tour of Europe by Antony and the Johnsons and Charles Atlas during the fall of 2006. Described by Antony as “some of the most significant work of my career,” the documentary pairs Antony’s songs and Atlas’ unfurling video portraiture of 13 women to explore themes of identity, transcendence, and the revelation of a revolutionary feminine essence.

To celebrate the release of the TURNING documentary and concert on DVD+CD, during the month of December, Antony and the Johnsons and Charles Atlas’ “You Are My Sister” will be featured each night at 11:57pm as part of the Midnight Moment program, a massive digital art gallery on the electronic billboards of Times Square presented by the Times Square Advertising Coalition and curated by Times Square Arts. The film will count down the final three minutes of each day leading up to New Year’s Eve, reminding us that we are all connected as we reflect on the year past and look forward to the year to come.

TURNING is now available on DVD+CD and digitally in North America via Secretly Canadian and November 10th in the UK and Europe via Rough Trade. It includes a DVD of the documentary and CD of the complete audio recording of the TURNING concert, live at The Barbican in London in November 2006. Purchase now via Secretly Canadian/Rough Trade, iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

From Antony-

“I would describe TURNING as some of the most significant work of my career. Charles Atlas and I spent seven years producing the film and another year and a half showing the film at select festivals. In the last three years especially, the recognition of transgendered people and the resurgence of feminist consciousness has exploded in popular culture around the world. We planted some seeds for this zeitgeist in 2006, when I travelled with thirteen courageous women across Europe and presented the concert TURNING, exploring the intersection between images of contemporary trans-femininity and visions of pioneering future feminist artists such as Kembra Pfahler and Johanna Constantine. We shared this circle of modern femininity with the world, bringing it from the late night stages of NYC to some of the most highly regarded theaters in Europe.”

TURNING saw its theatrical release from fall 2011 – summer 2012, premiering at festivals in London, Melbourne, New York City, and Copenhagen. The release of the deluxe edition of the TURNING DVD will coincide with select TV screenings around the world and will include a CD of the entire concert. The CD will contain live renditions of songs from the first three Antony and the Johnsons‘ full length albums – Antony and the Johnsons, I Am A Bird Now, and The Crying Light as performed by an ensemble of musicians including Maxim Moston, Rob Moose, Julia Kent, Parker Kindred, Jeff Langston and Thomas Bartlett. Additionally, it will also feature two rare Antony and the Johnsons studio recordings from that period.

TURNING will be available on DVD+CD and digitally on November 11 in North American via Secretly Canadian and November 10th in the UK and Europe via Rough Trade. Pre-order now via Secretly Canadian/Rough Trade, iTunes, Amazon, and your local record store.

The Museum of Modern Art has commissioned artist/musician Antony to conceive, produce, and perform a large-scale concert and performance event, Swanlights, with Antony and the Johnsons, on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. at Radio City Music Hall. You can read more about it at the New York Times and Pitchfork.

Envisioned as a meditation on light, nature, and femininity, Swanlights includes songs from all four of Antony and the Johnsons’ albums (self-titled, I am a Bird Now, The Crying Light, and Swanlights), set to symphonic arrangements by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, and Maxim Moston. It is produced in collaboration with light artist Chris Levine, lighting designer Paul Normandale, and set designer Carl Robertshaw. Antony and the Johnsons: Swanlights is organized by Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large of The Museum of Modern Art and Director of MoMA PS1, with the assistance of Eliza Ryan, Curatorial Assistant, MoMA PS1.

This month also sees a work-in-progress screening of TURNING, a film by Charles Atlas and Antony on November 11th at Copenhagen’s Documentary Film Festival CPH:DOX. In 2006 Antony and the Johnsons and Charles Atlas toured Europe with a concert and live video portrait of 13 women from New York City. The film TURNING explores the heart of that performance. Through its synthesis of Antony’s songs and unfurling video portraiture of the beauties who performed on stage, TURNING creates an intimate and cinematic experience exploring the themes of identity, transcendence and the revelation of essence.

Tickets to Antony and the Johnsons: Swanlights will go on-sale to the public on Saturday, November 12, at 10:00 a.m.
