Earlier this morning, Spin debuted Nite Jewel’s second single, “In The Dark,” from her forthcoming album, One Second to Love. The song begins with a statement of puzzling contradiction from a female singer, a statement which represents a battle cry for those who have fallen victim to love’s disorienting effects. Over simple guitar strings, drifting synthesizers, and an echoing drum loop, Ramona Gonzalez describes human attachment as a paradoxical force that is as alienating as it is intoxicating. Taking cues from Sade and Prefab Sprout, “In The Dark” shows just how much impact can be culled from a set of simple yet effective elements.
Ramona also recently recorded Stevie Wonder’s “Visions” in tribute of Yours Truly founder’s late sister. Echoing the work of Alice Coltrane’s “Turiya Sings,” “Visions (Nite Jewels Seance)” is bare-bones; Ramona reworks the song with effortless grace for a somber, beautiful rendition. Listen below.
You can see Nite Jewel live this spring. Ramona kicks off the tour at Austin’s SXSW and then teams up with Chairlift for the majority of dates-full list below.
