Cherry Glazerr have shared a brand new single, titled “Soft Drink”, via Secretly Canadian. The track marks a continuing evolution, sound-wise, from 2019 album Stuffed & Ready (“…devastating, deep and multilayered.” 15 Best Rock Albums of 2019 – NPR).
‘Soft Drink’ follows recent singles ‘Rabbit Hole’ and ‘Big Bang’ (‘swells effortlessly from a dreamy simmer to an expansive peak’ – Rolling Stone) in taking on a more electronic and experimental feel – partly influenced by the music Clementine Creevy (Cherry Glazerr) was listening to at the time of writing; the likes of DJ Koze, Caribou, Yaeji and Kaytranada. “I feel like I’m growing into the artist that I’ve always wanted to be”, mentions Creevy on the direction of the recent singles.
On writing ‘Soft Drink’, Creevy said:
“I started with that synth line. It just popped into my head while I was driving and I like frantically recorded it into my voice memos while driving to the beach kind of down by Hermosa and Manhattan beach. I was randomly obsessed with the song ‘Naive’ by The Kooks and kind of listening to it a lot, and I think that sound crept in a little. The song is about yearning for some validation. Sometimes all you need is company and you’re not looking for anything specific, just someone to dance with. It was a lonely year obviously haha.”
‘Soft Drink’, produced by Creevy with Suzy Shinn, grapples with the prospect of opening up to someone (“I’m nervous to show you myself”), as the modulated synths and unique drum sounds build towards the song’s melodic, emotive chorus.
