Richard Swift and Damien Jurado are slated to release a covers record, Other People’s Songs, Volume 1, on December 2nd via Secretly Canadian. The two prolific singer-songwriters first worked together on Jurados 2010 album, Saint Bartlett, cutting the entirety of the LP in only three days. Several months after that records release, Jurado and Swift reconvened once more in Oregon, recording the contents of Other People’s Songs over the course of one late August weekend simply because the two wanted an excuse to see each other and hang out.

“Richard referred to it as ‘summer camp'” remembers Jurado, “and that’s exactly what it was. No real set plan. Just a few songs chosen by each of us to cover, a four-track cassette recorder, all tracked in Richard’s living room or kitchen.

Immediacy and simplicity reign supreme on Other People’s Songs, a record permeated by an off-the-cuff, handmade feel and wholly singular interpretations of ’60s and ’70s tracks. Jurado acknowledges that the tracklist is eclectic – from American heartland a la John Denver to motor pioneers and proggy behemoths – and in that way, a reflection of both Jurado and Swift’s personalities. Although Other Peoples Songs was released digitally back in 2010, here it is, six years later, finally available in physical format.
